Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the shape of red blood cells gets abnormal, thereby affecting the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Red blood cells are the round cells which are very flexible and they move through blood vessels very easily. In sickle cell anemia, the shape of red blood cells become sickle shaped or crescent moon shaped. The cells are not flexible and sticky in nature. Their movement through the blood vessels is slow and they can lead to blockage of blood flow. As red blood cells carry oxygen to the different body parts, the sickle shaped red blood cells do not perform their function properly. Their life span is less as compared to normal red blood cells.
