Description
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is also known as idiopathic thrombocytopenia. It is a blood disorder which is characterized by excessively low levels of platelets in blood. This leads to easy bruising and bleeding as platelets are responsible for blood clotting. It can be both acute and chronic. As there has been no known cause of the disease, it is known as idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. But it mostly occurs after viral infection, rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disorders.
Some of the common signs and symptoms of ITP are:
- Reddish-purple dots under the skin
- Bleeding gums
- Bruising
- Presence of blood in urine and stool
- Profuse menstrual bleeding
