Description
Frozen shoulder is a disease which is characterized by the pain and stiffness in shoulder joint. It is also known as adhesive capsulitis. It is a painful condition in which the range of motion of shoulder joint gets reduced. In this, the tissue surrounding shoulder joint gets inflamed, thick and stiff. The shoulder joint gets frozen and a person feels more pain during movement. The signs and symptoms appear slowly and get worse over time.
The symptoms of frozen shoulder appear in three stages. Following are the three stages of frozen shoulder:
- Freezing stage: In this stage, the shoulder joint becomes stiff and there occur pain on movement of the joint. The pain increases during night time. This stage lasts for 6 weeks to 9 months.
- Frozen stage: Pain decreases during this stage but the shoulder gets more stiff. It becomes unable to move and a person finds difficult to perform daily tasks and activities. It lasts for 2 to 6 months.
- Recovery or thawing stage: During this stage, pain decreases and the movement of shoulder joint increases. There occurs full recovery of the motion of shoulder joint. This stage lasts from 6 months to 2 years.
