Description
Amenorrhea is a medical condition which is characterized by the absence of menstruation (periods) in females. It is of two types – primary amenorrhea and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation in a girl by the age of 15 years whereas secondary amenorrhea is the absence of three or more periods consecutively. The most common cause of amenorrhea is hormonal imbalance. The other causes include pregnancy, lactation or any anatomical defects. However, malnutrition, excessive stress, obesity or low body mass index increase the risk of amenorrhea.
The most common signs and symptoms of amenorrhea are:
- Absence of menstruation
- Loss of hair
- Excessive growth of facial hair
- Headache
- Pain in pelvis
- Acne
- Hot flashes
- Dryness of vagina
HOW AYURVEDA HELPS?
In Ayurveda, amenorrhea is known as nashtartava. Nashta means absence and aartva means menstruation. It is also known as anartva. It occurs because of the imbalance of the vata and kapha doshas. These doshas block the channels which carry menstrual blood. Due to this, the monthly discharge of menstrual blood doesn’t take place leading to amenorrhea.
