Absence of monthly period for more than three months is Known as Amenorrhea. It is can be temporary or permanent which is a result of change in function or issue with some part of female reproductive system.
Naturally female will have amenorrhea in conditions like pregnancy, lactation period and after menopause which is normal. But other than these condition if female experience amenorrhea then it should be investigated.
In modern world because of life style and eating habits there are increased cases of amenorrhea in young females.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF AMENORRHEA :
- Primary Amenorrhea : When female do not gets first menstrual bleeding by the age of 15 years and it can be a permanent condition.
- Secondary Amenorrhea : In this type normal menstrual period stops for 3 months or more. It is caused by physical factors and generally happens later in life.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF AMENORRHEA IN YOUNG FEMALES ?
There are many causes for development of this condition in young females which includes :
- Thyroid Disorder : Thyroid hormones are vital for normal functioning of female reproductive system as it modulate metabolism and development of uterine, ovarian and placental tissues. Thus underactive or overactive thyroid gland can lead to amenorrhea in young females.
- Primary Ovarian Insufficiency : The ovaries fails earlier than average before the age of 40 years which causes imbalance in production of female hormones and lead to amenorrhea.
- Obesity : Being over-weight cause imbalance in level of female hormones that changes the ovulation pattern and can cause missed periods.
- Eating Disorder : Individual with eating disorders like Bulimia and anorexia have too low body weight which can lead to amenorrhea in young females.
- Nutritional Deficiencies : Certain nutrients like vitamin D, iron, vitamin-B12 , iodine etc are useful in synthesis of many hormones in body. The deficiency of these nutrients can cause hormonal imbalance in body and lead to development of amenorrhea.
- Stress : Experiencing stressful conditions can affect the hormone level in body thus cause functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. Females with this type of amenorrhea are also at higher risk of anxiety and depression.
- Excessive Exercise : Doing excessive physical leads to low amount of body fats which can contributes to low estrogen secretion thus causing menstrual dysfunction.
- Certain Mental Health Medications : Certain medications like anti-depressants , mood stabilizers have adverse affect on pituitary and hypothalamus gland work. Disturbance in these glands work cause disruption of hormone levels in body which may cause cessation of one’s periods.
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome : There is disruption in levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. The level of Testosterone is high and level of estrogen and progesterone decrease which leads to irregular or missed menstrual periods.
- Pituitary Gland Problems : Pituitary is the gland that manages the release of hormones that tends to control menstrual cycle. Any issue with pituitary gland like Pituitary adenoma, postpartum necrosis of pituitary gland etc can affect the normal function of pituitary gland and hormones it produce. Which can affect normal ovulation cycle and cause amenorrhea.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF AMENORRHEA IN YOUNG FEMALES ?
The main symptom experienced by young females is lack of menstrual periods for 3 months or more. Other symptoms they may experience depends upon the cause. The common symptoms includes :
- Vision Changes
- Hot Flashes
- Headaches
- Acne
- Vaginal dryness
- Excessive facial hair growth
PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR AMENORRHEA IN YOUNG FEMALES :
- Maintain Healthy Diet : Including food rich in essential nutrients which helps to regulate menstruation and also balances the hormone levels in the body.
- Maintain Stress Levels : As stress act as primary cause for imbalance of hormones thus maintaining stress level through meditation or yoga also helps to prevent amenorrhea in young females .
