Very few people will know about varicose veins. Before knowing about this, let us know what the function of the veins is. In the circulatory system, veins are the blood vessels that carry blood to the heart. Oxygenated blood flows (oxygen mixed) in some veins except pulmonary and umbilical vein. Most of the veins carry deoxygenated blood from the tissue (tissue) back to the lungs (depletion of oxygen). The structure and function of the veins are completely separate from the arteries, the veins carry blood from the tissues to the heart.

Varicose veins
Have you ever noticed the blue veins visible under our skin? Perhaps you never thought that these veins could be painful. Actually, the veins under the surface of our skin start growing increasing in size, these enlarged veins are called varicose veins. Any vein or vein may be varicose vein.
What is varicose veins?
Veins carry blood from tissues to the heart. Veins have to carry blood from the legs to the heart in contrast to gravity. There are valves within the veins to aid this upward flow. The valve only allows blood to move upward. When the valves become weak or are unable to close, the blood does not ascend upwards and sometimes flows downwards. In such a situation, the veins swell and become elongated as the length increases. This is called Varicose Veins.
Symptoms of Varicose Veins
When the veins start swelling due to lack of proper circulation of blood, there are other symptoms besides this symptom which are due to varicose veins-
Blue or deep purple veins
Feeling heaviness in feet.
Muscular cramps
Lower leg swelling
Swollen or twisted veins that look like ropes
Pain after sitting or standing for a long time
itching around one or more veins
Causes of Varicose Veins
As discussed earlier, the veins carry blood from the tissues to the heart and when the blood is unable to move upwards, the veins begin to swell. Accurate diagnosis is very important for effective treatment. According to Ayurveda, the imbalance of Vata (air and space) plays an important role in the formation of varicose veins. The role of blood and bile (heat) also cannot be ignored. Thus, treatment becomes an important part of maintaining the balance of Vata.
Apart from these, there are many reasons for having varicose veins, such as-
Increasing age – The risk of varicose veins may increase significantly with aging as the flexibility of the veins may decrease with increasing age, which can increase the stretch. In addition, due to worsening of the valve of the veins, the blood going towards the heart may flow in the opposite direction, causing blood to accumulate in the veins and become varicose vein.
Chances are more likely in women– Women are more likely to have varicose vein. Hormonal changes during pregnancy and periods increase the risk of varicose vein. Hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills may also increase this risk.
Obesity – Increased weight can put more pressure on the nerves, which can increase the chances of getting varicose veins.
Family History – If a family member has a problem with varicose veins, then the risk of varicose veins increases in other members as well.
Standing or sitting in the same position for a long time – If sitting or standing in the same position continuously, stretch in the veins may increase and varicose veins may be the problem due to not having the blood flow properly. There is also a possibility of having eczema or wound in the skin due to having varicose veins.
Prevention Tips for Varicose Veins
In order to avoid varicose veins or to make the condition better when it occurs, it is necessary to make some changes in lifestyle and diet, as well as some things to be avoided. Although it is a disease in which more precautions are needed than treatment, yet if symptoms do occur at any time, then do something like this-
