Open sores in the mouth are known to be Mouth ulcers that appear as sores which are yellow or white which is surrounded by a bright red surface.
Usually, sores are painful, appear on non-keratinized mouth tissue especially on the inner surface of the cheeks, tongue, lips, soft palate, and the base of the gums. They cause a tingling or burning sensation at the beginning which followed by a red spot or bumps that ulcerate later on.
The other name of Mouth ulcers is canker sores which are normally painful small lesions that formed in the mouth or at the baseline of gums. A person finds difficulty with eating, drinking, and talking.
Adolescents, women, and people with a family history of mouth ulcers are at higher risk for developing mouth ulcers.

- Minor ulcers: 2-8 mm in diameter usually clear up in 10-14 days
- Major ulcers– these are the biggest and deeper sores, with raised or irregular border. They take weeks to heal and left a scar
- Herpes or herpetiform ulcers: this type of ulcer is composed of clusters or dozens of small sores in the size of pinheads.

- On the underlying part of the skin, there are one or more painful sores
- Swollen skin around the sores

Some tips to treat mouth ulcer & remedy
- One should rinse the mouth with salt water and baking soda
- Use of milk of magnesium on the mouth ulcer
- Use of baking soda paste to cover mouth ulcers.
- Application of ice on canker sores
- Using topical lotions or pastes
- On mouth ulcer place damp tea bags
- Taking nutritional supplements like vitamin b-6, folic acid, vitamin b-12, and zinc.

What is an ayurvedic view of mouth ulcers?
Mukha paka in Ayurveda is caused due to imbalance in dosha (Vata, pitta, Kapha). Mainly pitta dosha is involved in it. Excessive consumption of spicy, oily, & fried food items results in mouth ulcers.
Oral ulcers are known as Mukha paka in Ayurveda. Mukha as mouth and paka means suppuration maturation or ulceration. Best medicine for mouth ulcer are taken which include both internal as well as external interventions.
Shodhana (purification therapy) is recommended in severe or chronic mouth ulcers. People with pitta Prakriti are predisposed to mouth ulcers.
Quick Remedy for Mouth Ulcer
1. Honey
Honey has antibacterial properties. It helps to retain moisture and prevents drying of the mouth. It also hastens the process of new tissue growth.
You can apply raw honey or mix with amla and gently rub on the affected area. You can also use turmeric with honey, which also helps in healing ulcers at home.
2. Mulethi
Mulethi has long been used in Ayurveda due to its medicinal properties. For mouth ulcers caused due to stomach problems, mulethi works amazing.
It can be taken with water or with some honey. It helps in stomach cleansing and removes toxins that could be responsible for the ulcers.
3. Triphala
Triphala is a herbal mixture of three Indian fruits – Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki. “Take1/2 teaspoon of Triphala with 1 cup of water to make a decoction. Gargle with it once a day.
4. Mishri & camphor
8 grams mishri and 1 gram of camphor should be taken and apply this powder on the sores. This combination helps to reduce irritation and swelling. Mishri acts as a mouth freshener and is known to reduce any inflammation of the mouth. Camphor may also help to reduce ulcers effectively.
5. Coconut oil
Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties. Swish oil in your mouth and then spit it out. Repeat this several times a day to reduce swelling and pain. Similarly desi ghee an old age remedy for mouth ulcers. Apply desi ghee on the ulcer, wait for few minutes and then spit it out. Rinse your mouth after that.
6. Aloe vera juice
This is one of the simple home remedies to treat mouth ulcers. Aloe vera shows anti-inflammatory action and drinking aloe vera juice even cure stomach ulcers. Aloe vera is an amazing herb in healing the stomach lining and reducing acidic secretions.
7. Tulsi
