These are lymphoid tissues which prevent entry of micro-organisms through throat. They act as filter and trap germs. They also make antibodies to fight infections. But sometimes, they get infected. This leads to their infection causing tonsillitis. The common signs and symptoms include swelling in tonsils, sore throat, tenderness in lymph nodes present on side of the neck and difficulty in swallowing.
