INTRODUCTION
Tamarind is a tropical fruit , is a multipurpose plant all parts of the tree are used in the chemical , pharmaceutical ,food and textile industries.
IN AYURVEDA
Botanical Name : Tamarindus indica.
Family : Fabaceae
According to Ayurveda Tamarind is known as “Imli”or “Chinch”. It is believed to have a cooling effect on the body
Medicinal Properties
- Rasa – Madhur , sour
- Guna -Guru
- Veerya – Ushana
- Vipak – Amla
- Effect on Tridosha – Balance kapha and vata Dosha
- Part used :- Fruit , seed , flower, kshara
- Dosage : -Powder 1-3g
- kshara 500mg -1g
- Decoction 50-100ml
CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF TAMARIND
Tamarind contains various chemical constituents that contribute to its medicinal properties:
- Tartaric acid : responsible for the sour taste of tamarind and also has antioxidant properties.
- Vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin A , Thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3) , folate (B9).
- Minerals : It contains minerals like potassium , iron , calcium , phosphorus , magnesium and zinc.
- Polyphenols : Tamarind contains various polyphenols such as flavonoids and phenolic acids which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Pectin : A type of soluble fiber that helps lower cholesterol levels and stabilize blood sugar levels.

SIDE EFFECTS
- Tamarind fruit is contra-indicated for Pitta body type and in high Pitta conditions.
- Avoid in case of Diarrhea , IBS etc.
- Long -term use of tamarind may cause loss of tooth surface (dental erosion) due to its acidic content.
- Allergic reactions signs include itching , swelling , difficulty breathing or rash.
- Tamarind may interact with certain medications including aspirin , warfarin etc.
