STOMATITIS AND ITS AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

Stomatitis is defined as the inflammation of mouth and lips. It affects the mucous membrane of mouth and lips, with or without oral ulceration.
CAUSES OF STOMATITIS:
- Dry mouth
- Trauma from ill-fitting dentures or braces
- Tobacco use
- Infection such as herpes simplex viruses or herpes zoster.
- Side effects of chemotherapy, radiation
- Weakened immune system.
- Deficiency of Vitamin -B12, zinc, Iron.
- Biting of cheeks
- Poor oral hygiene
- Irritating food or chemicals.
- Systemic disorders
- Eating hard food items that cause friction.
TYPES OF STOMATITIS:
- Herpes stomatitis:
It is the infection caused by herpes simplex virus. It is a fluid filled sores that occurs around the lips. It is usually painful and last upto7-10 days. It is associated with flu like symptoms.
- Aphthous stomatitis:
It is a condition which is characterized by repeated formation of benign and non-contagious mouth ulcer. It is also termed as canker sore. It can be painful and last up to 5-10 days. It is not associated with fever.
SYMPTOMS OF STOMATITIS:
- Red patches
- Blisters
- Swelling of mouth
- Pain or irritation on lips, cheeks, gums, tongue.
- Burning sensation in mouth
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Oral thrush

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF STOMATITIS
In Ayurveda it is compared with mukhpaka in which there is vitiation of pitta dosha leading to mouth ulcers. Mukha is one of the important parts of body. The digestive system starts from mukha and it is important to maintain an oral hygiene.
CAUSES IN AYURVEDA:
- Excessive intake of dry, ruksha, rough, spicy food and beverages.
- Insufficient water intake.
- Improper brushing
- Stress
- Excess intake of dried food
PANCHKARMA TREATMENT:
- Kavala:
In this procedure medicated oil or water filled in mouth moving inside the oral cavity is known as kavala.
- Gandusha :
In this procedure medicated oil or water is filled in mouth without moving it inside the oral cavity. This is called as gandusha.

HOME REMEDIES FOR STOMATITIS:
- HONEY:
It has many microbial properties and can help in repairing open wound quickly.
- COCONUT OIL:
It has antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing ulcers naturally.
- SALT WATER:
Mix tablespoon of salt in lukewarm water. Gargles by using this liquid. It has antiseptic properties.
- ORANGE:
It is rich source of vitamin -C which helps in preventing ulcers.
- TURMERIC POWDER:
It has antiseptic properties which help into fight with infection. It also reduces inflammation or pain from mouth.
- ALUM POWDER:
It has astringent properties that may help in shrinkage of tissues and dry out sores. Mix a pinch of powder with water than apply on sores.
- BAKING SODA:
It helps in restoring pH balance and reduces inflammation .Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of water. Swirl this solution in mouth for 15-30 seconds and split it out.
CHANDIGARH AYURVED CENTRE MEDICATION FOR THE TREATMENT OF MOUTH ULCER:
- Panchatikta Ghrita Guggulu –
The tablet cures almost all the oral problems by pacifying aggravated doshas and helps in recovering the normal skin The tablet is composed of Shuddha guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Amrita (Tinospora cordifolia), Gajapippali (Piper chaba), Shunthi (Zingiber officinale), etc. The tablet is Tridoshahara, thus is very effective in maintaining the hormonal level in the body. - Sheet Dhara-

- Panchasakar churna-
Panchsakar churna is very effective as it shows antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, laxative, & analgesic properties. It is a classical herbal churna prepared from ingredients like Shatapushpa, Balaharitaki, Shunthi, Swarnapatri, & Saindhav lavana. This herbal churna helps in removing all toxins from the body & provides good results. As in mouth ulcers, patient constipation is seen so the use of this churna gives effective results.
Recommended Dosage: Take 1 teaspoonful at bedtime with lukewarm water.
- Pitta Balance Tablet-
Pitta doshas is responsible for digestion, metabolism, blood quality, thirst, appetite, eyesight, skin color and quality, body temperature, and mental abilities of intelligence and courage. Pitta doshas is composed of a fire element that digests almost everything that a person eats or drink. The eaten food is transformed into energy for the body to use in various functions of the body.
Recommended Dosage: Take 1 tablet twice daily with normal water.
- Rama tail-
Rama tail is an Ayurvedic preparation containing clove oil, fennel seeds, cumin, etc. These ingredients show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, cooling, carminative, & immuno-modulator. The use of this oil on mouth ulcers gives a cooling effect.
Recommended Dosage: Take 2 drops of this oil & apply over the affected area.
