Sciatica is a type of nerve pain that radiates along the path of sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve is a thick nerve that originates from the sacral plexus in the lower back. It branches down through the buttocks down into the legs upto the toes. It mostly occurs because of the herniated disc, narrowing of the spine, bony spur which lead to compression of the nerve. It causes pain and inflammation of the area where the nerve is affected. Sciatica mostly affects one side of the body. In rare cases, both sides of the body are involved.
The pain associated with sciatica is severe but mostly it resolves on its own in a few weeks. In only a few cases, surgery is required.

CAUSES OF SCIATICA
Sciatica occurs because of the compression of the sciatic nerve. Following are the causes of sciatica:
- Slipped disc
- Osteoarthritis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Diabetes
- Physical injury to the lumbar spine or sciatic nerve
- Pirifomis syndrome
- Muscle spasm in back or buttocks
- Disorder of cauda equina
RISK FACTORS OF SCIATICA
Following are the factors which make a person more prone to sciatica are:
- Age related changes in vertebral spine
- Being overweight
- Carrying heavy load on back
- Sitting for long time
- Pregnancy
- Increased blood sugar
- Improper body posture
- Having a spinal injury in past
- Smoking
SYMPTOMS OF SCIATICA
The common signs and symptoms of sciatica are:
- Pain in lower back radiating in hips to down the leg
- Numbness in the affected buttock, leg or feet
- Pain during movement
- Loss of movement
- Tingling sensation in legs, feet or toes
- Shooting pain down the leg
COMPLICATIONS OF SCIATICA
In most sciatica patients, symptoms resolve on its own. But if not treated properly, the nerve can get permanently damaged. The complications which are associated with sciatica are:
- Weakness in the affected leg
- Loss of sensation
- Involuntary bladder function
- Loss of bowel function
PREVENTION OF SCIATICA
With the following steps, sciatica can be prevented:
- Doing regular exercise helps in making core muscles strong
- Maintaining a good body posture
- Eating a nutritious diet
- Avoid alcohol or smoking
DIAGNOSIS OF SCIATICA
The doctor will do proper physical examination and check the reflexes of the concerned area. He will ask about the signs and symptoms of the disease. He will make the patient do some of the following tests:
- X-ray
- MRI scan
- CT scan
- Electromyography

1. Makar Rasayan tablet

3. Pain-O-kill Tablets
As the name suggests these tablets will kill the pain naturally. The herbs present in the formation of these tablets are Ashwagandha, Hadjod, Punarnava, Nirgundi, Methi, Garlic, etc. These herbs in combination show antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulator properties. The regular use of these tablets reduce body pain and acts on its root cause.
Recommended Dosage: Take 1 tablet twice daily with normal water.
4. Trikatu Syrup
Trikatu combines the goodness of Black pepper, Ginger and, Long pepper to create an herbal remedy for digestive ailments, sluggish metabolism, obesity, and high cholesterol.
