ABOUT FATTY LIVER
Fatty liver is common condition nowadays in which excessive fat builds up in liver cells.
Liver is the largest organ of the body. It helps digestion of food, store energy and remove all the toxic substance. Excessive fat in the liver can cause liver inflammation, which can damage liver and cause other serious health problems like cirrhosis etc.
There are two main types:
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
- Alcoholic fatty liver disease, also called alcoholic steatohepatitis
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
NAFLD occur in people who doesn’t consume alcohol for longer time . This type of condition do not produce much complications but when it remain undiagnosed then lead to serious liver condition known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH.
Alcoholic fatty liver disease
Alcoholic fatty liver disease is due to heavy alcohol use for longer period of time. Alcoholic fatty liver disease is the starting stage of alcohol-related liver disease. Further it may lead to hepatitis and cirrhosis.
SYMPTOMS OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE
Fatty liver disease is a silent disease having no or very few symptoms . Some symptoms people may notices
- Fatigue and weakness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Moderate to severe abdominal pain
- Digestion related issue like anorexia, bloating etc.
- Itchy skin
CAUSES of FATTY LIVER
Main factor that is responsible for fatty liver disease is improper, unhealthy and sedentary life style and dietary habits. These are the root cause for any other factor like obesity , improper digestion etc. that further leads to this disease. Some factors are
- Obesity: Due to Obesity accumulation of fat occurs in body that involves low-grade inflammation due to which liver fat storage occur
- Insulin resistance: Insulin resistance and high insulin levels in individuals increase liver fat storage in people with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- High intake of refined carbs: Frequent intake of refined carbs promotes liver fat storage, especially when high amounts are consumed by obese or insulin-resistant individuals.
- Beverage consumption: Beverages that contains too much sugar like soda and energy drinks are high in fructose cause liver fat accumulation .
- Impaired gut health: When there is an imbalance in gut bacteria,other gut health issues may cause fatty liver.
- Fatty liver may occur side effects from some types of medications- such as methotrextate , valproic acid
DIAGNOSE
It is very important to diagnose fatty liver timely to prevent its further complications which can lead to serious health diseases. To diagnose fatty liver, doctor will take your medical history, conduct a physical exam.
Blood investigations like CBC, LFT are useful to diagnose the condition.
Imaging studies – USG , CT- scan , MRI are useful to if any kind of scarring is there in liver .
Other investigations like Fibroscan and liver biopsy can also be performed.
Treatment for fatty liver
No specific medications are available in modern science for the treatment of fatty liver disease.
In many cases, lifestyle changes and dietary changes can help reverse fatty liver disease
Avoid alcohol intake
Take steps to lose weight like start exercise.
Some dietary changes like avoid diet that lead to fat storage in the body and add healthy diet like salads, vegetables, light diet in daily routine
AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT FOR FATTY LIVER
In Ayurvedic context, this condition can be correlated with Yakrutodar roga. This is considered as one of the eight type of Udararoga. Reduced digestive fire (Mandagni) and accumulation of toxins (mal sanchay) are two main cause of udar roga. In texts pleehodar is mentioned and it is said that diseased condition occurs in right side of abdominal cavity it is considered as yakritodar roga.
Fatty liver has no cure in modern science but Ayurveda plays an important role in management of fatty liver. Ayurveda provides effective treatment through a holistic combination ahara (diets), vihara (lifestyle recommendations) and vyayama (mild exercise).
