PANCREATITIS TYPES, CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

OVERVIEW
Pancreas is a disease which is characterized by the inflammation of pancreas. Pancreas is a large, leaf-like gland which is present behind the stomach in upper abdomen. It is a composite gland which means it acts as both exocrine as well as endocrine glands. It secretes digestive juices and hormones which help in digestion of food and maintainance of glucose level in blood. It can occur either suddenly or takes many years.
The severity of pancreatitis varies among individuals. Mild pancreatitis can be treated with medications but in severe cases, it can be fatal.
TYPES OF PANCREATITIS
Pancreatitis is of two types:
- Acute pancreatitis: It is the sudden inflammation of pancreas. It lasts for a short time period.
- Chronic pancreatitis: It occurs for a long time period and mostly occurs after acute pancreatitis.
CAUSES OF PANCREATITIS
Pancreas produces digestive enzymes which are responsible for digestion of food. The enzymes get activated when released into the intestine. But due to some abnormality, when these enzymes get activated inside the pancreas, this causes irritation of the cells of pancreas leading to inflammation. Repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis permanently damage the pancreatic cells. This forms scar tissue inside the pancreas leading to chronic pancreatitis. The pancreas then loosens its function.
RISK FACTORS OF PANCREATITIS
The factors which increase the risk of contracting pancreas are:
- Increased body weight
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Smoking
- Increased sugar level in blood
- Having a family predisposition of pancreatitis
- High levels of calcium in blood
- Presence of gall stones
- High cholesterol levels
- Any infection
- Abdominal injury
- Cystic fibrosis
SYMPTOMS OF PANCREATITIS
The common signs and symptoms of pancreatitis are:
- Pain in abdomen
- Abdominal pain radiating in back
- Fever
- Increased heart rate
- Tenderness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Presence of fat in stools
- Diarrhea
COMPLICATIONS OF PANCREATITIS
The complications which are associated with pancreatitis are:
- Viral or bacterial infections
- Difficulty in breathing
- Respiratory problems
- Malnutrition
- Diabetes
- Pseudocyst
- Kidney failure
- Pancreatic cancer
DIAGNOSIS OF PANCREATITIS
The doctor will do a thorough physical examination of the patient. He will ask about the signs and symptoms of the disease. He will recommend some of the tests to the patients for the evaluation of the disease:
- Complete blood count
- Liver function tests
- Renal function tests
- Ultrasound
- CT scan
- MRI scan
- Stool tests
