WHAT IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME?
Irritable bowel syndrome is a group of symptoms which affect the large intestine. It is a common gastrointestinal disorder. It is also known as spastic colon, irritable colon, mucous colitis and spastic colitis. It is associated with abdominal pain, cramps and excessive gas formation. The intensity of symptoms vary from one person to another. It is a chronic condition which can be managed by some lifestyle changes and diet management. In severe cases, medication is required.
CAUSES OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
There has been found no reason for the occurrence of irritable bowel syndrome. However, some of the following factors can be responsible:
- Imbalance of the gut microbes
- Weak intestinal contractions
- Gastroentertitis
- Bacterial overgrowth in intestine
- Abnormal levels of serotonin in intestine
- Stress in early life especially during childhood
SYMPTOMS OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
The common signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are:
- Abdominal cramps
- Pain in abdomen
- Bloating
- Diarrhea at night
- Weight loss
- Bleeding from rectum
- Anemia
- Difficulty in swallowing

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA
In ayurveda, there are three doshas in body – vata, pitta and kapha. They are present in balance with each other. But due to some abnormality, the balance among the three doshas gets disturbed. This leads to manifestation of a disease.
Irritable bowel syndrome is called grahani. It occurs because of the decreased amount of jatharagni or digestive fire of the body. This causes improper digestion and the toxins get accumulated in the body.
