OVERVIEW
Cervical spondylosis is an age-related disorder which is caused by the natural wearing down of cartilage, ligaments, disks and bones of the neck. It is a very common disorder which worsens with age. The disks get shrink and dehydrate alongwith bony projections along the edges of bones. Stiffness and pain in neck are the main symptoms of cervical spondylosis. People above the age of 60 years are most commonly affected. It is also called osteoarthritis of neck.
In most of the cases, there are no symptoms of cervical spondylosis. However, with physical therapy, medications and soft-collar, the treatment can be done. In extreme cases, injections or surgery is done.
CAUSES OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
Due to increasing age, there occurs normal wear and tear of the cartilage. The changes which occur in the cervical spine are:
- Herniation of disks
- Disks get smaller due to shrinkage and drying out
- Stiffness of spinal ligaments
- Bony projections alongside the edges of bones
RISK FACTORS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
The factors which make a person more prone to cervical spondylosis are:
- Increasing age
- Cigarette smoking
- Having a genetic predisposition to it
- Having a neck injury
- Heavy lifting
- Certain occupations like sitting for long hours on computers, bus or truck drivers, etc
- Lack of physical activity
SYMPTOMS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
The common signs and symptoms of cervical spondylosis are:
- Pain and swelling in neck
- Stiffness in neck
- Tingling sensation in arms, hands, legs or feet
- Numbness in arms, hands
- Muscle spasm
- Neck soreness
- Lack of coordination
- Clicking or grinding sound during neck movement
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Lack of bladder control
COMPLICATIONS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
Following are the complications which are associated with cervical spondylosis are:
- Nerve compression
- Spinal stenosis
- Permanent damage
DIAGNOSIS OF CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
The doctor will do a thorough physical examination of the patient. He will look for the range of motion of the neck. He will check for muscle reflexes and their strength. He will suggest some of the tests to the patients:
- Neck X-ray
- CT scan
- MRI scan
- Electromyography
- Nerve conduction study
