OVERVIEW
Yeast infection is a type of fungal infection of the vagina. The yeast responsible for fungal infection is called candida. Therefore, the other names of yeast infection are vaginal candidiasis or vulvovaginal candidiasis. In healthy vagina, there is bacteria and some yeast present in it. They are present in balance and keep the micro-organisms at bay, thereby preventing infections of the reproductive tract. But due to an imbalance, the yeast multiplies in the vagina leading to candidiasis. It is a type of vaginitis. The most common symptoms are inflammation, itching and burning sensation of the vagina. The amount and consistency of vaginal discharge change. Vaginal yeast infection spreads through sexual contact but it also occurs in females who are not sexually active yet.
The treatment involves antifungal medications and personal cleanliness.
CAUSES OF YEAST INFECTION
The yeast infection is caused by the excessive growth of yeast in the concerned area. The yeast species is Candida albicans which is responsible for yeast infection. There are other varieties of Candida also, but Candida albicans infection is the most common. There is Lactobacillus bacteria and yeast present in the vagina. Lactobacillus keeps the yeast in balance and doesn’t allow its overgrowth. But due to some abnormality, the yeast overgrows causing infection. The infection spreads through sexual contact, oral-genital contact and unhygienic conditions.
RISK FACTORS OF YEAST INFECTION
The factors which make a person at more risk of contracting yeast infection are:
- Weakened immune system
- Increased sugar levels in blood
- Pregnancy
- Using antibiotics, steroids, oral contraceptives
- Vaginal deodorants
- Wearing scented tampons
- Frequent vaginal douches or sprays
- Not changing sweaty clothes
- Stress
- Lack of sleep
SYMPTOMS OF YEAST INFECTION
The common signs and symptoms of yeast infection are:
- Burning sensation in vagina and vulva
- Thick, white vaginal discharge having cottage cheese like consistency
- Redness and swelling in vulva and vagina
- Small cuts in the skin of vulva
- Intense itching in vagina and vulva
- Pain and soreness in vagina
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Burning micturition
- Skin rashes
PREVENTION OF YEAST INFECTION
With some of the following steps, yeast infection can be prevented:
- Wearing cotton underwear
- Avoid tight innerwear
- Avoid using vaginal deodorants or sprays
- Eating a healthy diet
- Avoid hot baths
- Wearing loose clothing
DIAGNOSIS OF YEAST INFECTION
The doctor will ask about the signs and symptoms of the disease. He will take a complete medical history of the patient. He will take a sample of the vaginal discharge for lab examination. He will do a pelvic examination of the patient also.
