NON ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD) AND ITS AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT

Type of steatosis of liver which is caused due to factors other than excessive alcohol use. Storage of some fat in liver is normal but in steatosis more than 10% of the liver weight is fat which hinders the normal functioning of the liver and if not managed properly may leads to other health complications.
Many individuals suffering from Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic and some may never know that they are suffering from this condition. 2 to 5% of peoples suffering from NAFLD tends to experience the associated complications from the fat deposited in the liver. When the fats causes inflammation and damage the liver cells it is termed as Steato-hepatitis.
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD)?
The main cause of this condition is not known yet but certain factors contributes in the development of this condition. The factors includes :
- Being overweight or obese : Overweight individual mainly having fat around the waist area increase the risk of NAFLD in individual
- High blood pressure
- Age : Age plays an important role and individual with age more than 50 years are at more risk.
- Type-2 Diabetes
- Underactive Thyroid
- Insulin resistance like in poly-cystic ovary syndrome
- Certain conditions affecting how body uses insulin
- Metabolic syndrome
- Smoking
- High cholesterol
WHAT ARE THE STAGES OF NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD)?
This condition gradually progress and eventually causes permanent damage to liver if not detected early. The main stages includes :
- Simple Fatty liver or Steatosis : There is large harmless build-up of the fat in liver cells which is mostly undetected.
- Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis : There is inflammation of the liver cells in this stage as it is more serious form of NAFLD.
- Fibrosis : Due to persistent inflammation there is scaring of the tissues around liver along with nearby blood vessels. Even after scaring the liver is still functioning normally.
- Cirrhosis : After year of inflammation the liver shrinks and becomes lumpy and scarred . The damage is permanent which can lead to liver cancer and liver failure.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD)?
There are usually no symptoms but some of the common symptoms experienced includes :
- Discomfort or pain in upper abdomen on right side
- Fatigue
- Yellowing of eyes and skin
- Abdominal swelling
- Red palms
- Enlarged blood vessels beneath skin surface
- Ascites
AYURVED APPROACH :
In Ayurved it can be correlated with Yakrutodar Rog. Due to exposure to etiological factors the pitta and kapha get vitiated . The vitiated kapha dosha enters the yakrit (liver) which is said to be place of pitta where it cause obstruction of the srotos leading to development of the condition.

CHANDIGARH AYURVED CENTRE MEDICATIONS FOR TREATMENT OF NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE (NAFLD):
1. Detox Premium Powder:
