Netra Vasti – Panchakarma Therapy for Treatment of Eye Diseases

Netra Vasti, also known as Akshi Tarpana, is a process of keeping medicated ghee or oil in the eyes for a certain period of time. It is the best purification and rejuvenation process of eye and other sense organs. In healthy individuals it is carried out to protect the eyes from degeneration due to the aging process and to improve the vision in the diseased person.

PROCEDURE
Firstly the patient is made to lie on the droni on his/her back. A gentle massage is done on the head, eyes and face and then a frame of flour paste is made around both the eyes. Medicated ghee is then poured into the frame over the patient’s closed eyes. When sufficient amount of ghee has been poured into it, the patent is asked to open and close the eyes intermittently for the duration of about fifteen minutes. After this patient is asked to close his eyes and the oil is squeezed out from the frame with the help of a cotton swab and other warm medicated ghee is poured into it again. This step is repeated 3-4 times and the whole procedure lasts for about half an hour.
INDICATIONS
Netra vasti is indicated in the following conditions:-
- Blurred vision
- Darkness in front of eyes
- Dryness of the eyes
- Watering, itching or redness in the eyes
- Painful and swollen puffy eyes
- Opacity of cornea
- Glaucoma
- Squint in eyes
- Injury to the eyes
- Falling of eyelashes
