Mouth ulcers and Its Ayurvedic Treatment

Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, are small, painful sores that can develop inside the mouth. They often have a white or yellowish appearance with a red border and can make eating or talking uncomfortable.
Causes of mouth ulcers –
- Mouth ulcers can be caused by various factors, including:
- Trauma: Injury to the mouth, such as biting the inside of your cheek or lip, can trigger ulcers.
- Stress and hormonal changes: Emotional stress and hormonal shifts, especially in women, may contribute to the development of mouth ulcers.
- Certain foods: Spicy or acidic foods, as well as food allergies, can be potential triggers.
- Nutritional deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients, such as vitamin B12, iron, and folic acid, can lead to mouth ulcers.
- Medical conditions: Conditions like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, and immune system disorders can be associated with recurrent mouth ulcers.
Sign and symptom-
The signs and symptoms of mouth ulcers include:
- Pain: Mouth ulcers are often painful, especially when eating, drinking, or talking.
- Appearance: They typically have a white or yellowish center with a red border and can vary in size.
- Sensitivity: The area around the ulcer may be sensitive or swollen.
- Difficulty eating: Due to the discomfort, you may experience difficulty eating or avoiding certain foods.
- Irritation: Mouth ulcers can cause irritation and discomfort, making it challenging to maintain normal oral activities.
Complications-
Complications of mouth ulcers are generally rare, but they can include:
- Infection: If bacteria enter the open sore, it may lead to infection.
- Scarring: In some cases, particularly if the ulcers are large or take longer to heal, scarring may occur.
Risk factors for developing mouth ulcers include:
- Family history: There may be a genetic predisposition to recurrent mouth ulcers.
- Age and gender: They often occur more frequently in individuals between the ages of 10 and 40, and women seem to be more affected than men.
- Stress: Emotional stress or anxiety can trigger or exacerbate mouth ulcers.
- Certain foods: Spicy, acidic, or irritating foods can increase the risk of developing ulcers.
- Medical conditions: Conditions like celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and Behçet’s disease are associated with a higher risk of mouth ulcers.
Ayurvedic Management of mouth ulcers-
In Ayurveda, mouth ulcers are often attributed to an imbalance in the body’s doshas, particularly Pitta dosha. Ayurvedic approaches to manage mouth ulcers include:
- Dietary Modifications: Avoiding spicy, acidic, and hot foods that can aggravate Pitta is recommended. Opt for cool, soothing foods like yogurt, cucumber, and mint.
- Herbal Remedies:
- Triphala, a combination of three fruits, is often used for mouth rinses to reduce inflammation.
- Amla (Indian gooseberry) is considered beneficial for its cooling properties.
- Ghee (clarified butter) is sometimes applied topically for its soothing effect.
- Oil Pulling: Swishing coconut oil or sesame oil in the mouth (oil pulling) is believed to help detoxify and reduce inflammation.

- Panchatikta Ghrita Guggulu –

This herbal churna helps in removing all toxins from the body & provides good results. As in mouth ulcers, patient constipation is seen so the use of this churna gives effective results.
Recommended Dosage: Take 1 teaspoonful at bedtime with lukewarm water.
- Pitta Balance Tablet-

- Rama tail-
Rama tail is an Ayurvedic preparation containing clove oil, fennel seeds, cumin, etc. These ingredients show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, cooling, carminative, & immuno-modulator. The use of this oil on mouth ulcers gives a cooling effect.
Recommended Dosage: Take 2 drops of this oil & apply over the affected area.
