Monkey pox is a viral disease with smallpox like symptoms . Virus was first identified in 1959 in monkeys shipped from Thailand to Denmark research faculty. First human case was identified in 1970 in child from Democratic Republic of Congo.
After eradication of smallpox in 1980 and subsequent lack of vaccination efforts monkey pox emerges as important orthopoxvirus to public health.
This disease is mainly found in Central and West Africa but has been increasingly appearing in urban areas.
It spreads from animals to human. Animal reservoirs of monkey pox virus are squirrels, rats, monkeys, pig, and mice’s.

WHAT ARE THE MOD OF TRANSMISSION OF MONKEY POX ?
Animal to Human transmission happens after:
- coming in contact with mucosal lesions , blood or bodily fluids of infected animal.
- Consuming undercooked meat of infected animal.
- Use of products made of infected animal.
- Animal bite or scratch.
Human to Human transmission results from :
- Extended close contact with respiratory secretions of infected person.
- Close contact with contaminated personal belongings of infected person.
- Close contact with scabs , rashes of infected person.
- Infected mother can transmit the virus through placenta to fetus
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MONKEY POX ?
Incubation period of monkey pox is usually 6 to 13 days but may range from 5 to 21 days.
It is divided into two periods :
- Invasion period (0-5 days) – Characteristic features are:
- Fever
- Lack of energy
- Lymphadenopathy
- Muscle ache
- Back pain and intense headache
- The skin eruption begins after 1-3 days of appearance of fever. Face and extremities are more affect by rashes rather than trunk. Rashes may appear on or near genitals or anus and could be on other areas like hand, feet ,chest or mouth. The rashes evolve progressively from macules to papules, vesicles, pustules and crusts that dries and fell off. Crust disappear completely after 3 weeks.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF MONKEY POX ?
Complications of monkey pox may include :
- Sepsis
- Bronchopneumonia
- Secondary infections
- Encephalitis
- Infection of cornea leading to vision loss.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFRENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF MONKEY POX?
Monkey pox show similar symptoms like many diseases. Some the diseases are:
- Smallpox
- Disseminated zoster
- Generalized vaccinia
- Eczema herpeticum
- Chickenpox
- Syphilis
- Yaws
- Disseminated herpes simplex
- Scabies
- Bacterial skin infections
- Measles
DIAGNOSIS:
- History taking- Doctor ask the patient about the symptoms patient is experiencing . Doctor do the differential diagnosis of patient to rule off other diseases.
- Blood Sample is taken to perform PCR. The specimen should include
- Date of fever onset
- Date of rash onset
- Date of specimen collection
- Stage of rashes
- Age
- Testing of viral DNA
AYURVEBIC HERBES:
- Giloy help in increasing immunity and reduction of fever. So giloy decoction may help in monkey pox.
- Tulsi acts as an antibacterial agent and also help in lowering of fever. Tulsi leaves boiled in water can be consumed
- Turmeric powder mixed in milk may be useful in monkey pox due to its anti microbial properties.

This tablet contains pure herbal ingredients such as Nimba(Azadirachta indica), Patola(Cucumis acutangulus), Guduchi(Tinospora cordifolia), Vasa(Adhatoda vasica), etc. This tablet promotes detoxification and rejuvenation. Recommended Dosage – Gently apply over the affected area of the skin.
