Introduction
Melasma is a condition in which brown patches appear on the face. It occurs due to hormonal changes during pregnancy or from sun exposure. It happens because of overproduction of the cells that make the color of your skin. It is common, harmless. It fades after a few months. It appears most commonly on your cheeks, chin, nose above the upper lip and the forehead.
Causes-
There are 2 main causes of melasma, radiation, whether ultraviolet, visible light or infrared light and hormones. Other causes of melasma includes-
- Contraceptive therapy
- Antiseizure medications
- Estrogen / diethylstilbestrol
- Hypothyroidism
- Pregnancy
- Hormones
- Cosmetics
- Phototoxic drugs
What are the signs and symptoms of melasma?
It causes light brown, dark brown or bluish patches on your skin; sometimes patches can become red or inflamed. It appears in six locations or a combination of locations on your skin-
- Centrofacial – melasma appears on your cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip
- Malar- it appears on your cheeks and nose
- Lateral cheek pattern- it appears on both cheeks
- Brachial- melasma appears on your shoulders and upper arms
- Mandibular- it appears on the jawline
- Neck-in people of age 50 or older it appears on all sides of the neck

- Lichen planus

Ayurvedic management of Melasma –
In ayurveda melasma can be correlated with vyanga which can be caused by vitiation of pitta and vata dosha than it affects the rakta dhatu, Vataja, Pittaja, Kaphaja raktaja are the types of vyanga.

- Skin Glow Kadha :

- Panchsakar Churna:
Panchsakar Churna is an ayurvedic formulation that consists of five ingredients named as – Saindhav Lavana (Rock Salt), Swarnapatri (Cassia angustifolia), Shatapushpa (Anethum sowa), Shunti – (Zingiber officinale), Balaharitaki (Unripe fruits of Terminalia chebula).
