It comes under the class of drugs called Tricyclic antidepressants. It is works by increasing certain substances in brain that are needed to maintain mental balance. It is used for the treatment of anxiety and depression. It is also used sometimes for treatment of hives without known cause.

MECHANISM OF ACTION :
It  is known to be selective histamine H1 receptor blocker. Histamine is important mediator of wakefulness in cycle of sleep.

It inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine  at synaptic nerve terminals. It has negligible effect on reuptake of dopamine thus increase the dopamine neurotransmission in frontal cortex.
