What is Infertility?
In present scenario the rate of infertility is rising. The false dietary habits, pollution, sedentary lifestyle is contributing a lot for infertility. Primary infertility refers to as biological failure of a woman to conceive in her reproductive age after at least 1 year of unprotected intercourse without contraceptives or women who is unlikely to carry out full term pregnancy. While secondary infertility refers to couple who are unable to get pregnant but have been pregnant at least once. With the rising age of women the chances of infertility increases many folds. It is the estimation about 1 in 10 women in the age group 20 to 40 have in trouble conceiving. The causes of infertility may vary, there might be problem with female reproductive system, problem with female reproductive system or in both.
Ayurvedic view point over Infertility:
The Ayurveda revolves around the concept of tridosha, 7 Doshaand Dhatus and theAgni (Digestive power). With the balanced dosha and agni there occurs the biotranformation of one dhatu to another and the last dhatu formed is Shukra Dhatu (semen or reproductive tissues). According to Ayurveda the conception is a state of healthy ovum, healthy sperm, healthy uterus. Ayurveda states that both women and men health depends on shukra dhatu (reproductive tissues). And healthy shukra dhatu depends on all other tissues in the body, the nutrition one’s get. Ayuveda classical text mentioned different types of infertility:
- Vandhya: women is considered to be sterile and is incurable
- Apraja: Women can conceive and is curable
- Sapraja: inflicted with infertility woman’s child bearing age and have one or more children
What causes infertility?
- Age over 35 years for women and over 40 years for females
- Diabetes
- Excessive alcohol abuse and smoking
- Continuous exposure to pollution, environmental toxins
- Over exercising or even no physical activity
- Sexually transmitted disease (STDs)
- Obesity
- Radiation therapy
- Eating disorders like bulimia, anorexia nervosa etc
Risk factors for Female infertility:
- Women having abnormal menstrual cycle
- Blocked fallopian tubes
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Hormonal imbalance such as thyroid dysfunction, pituitary dysfunction
- Uterine problems like endometriosis, uterine fibroid, ovarian insufficiency, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOD)
- Past ectopic pregnancy
- Sickle cell anemia
- Celiac disease
Risk factors for male infertility:
- Premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation
- Undescended testis
- Testicular cancer
- Low sperm count or low testosterone
- Misuse of anabolic steroids
- Varicocele in scrotum
- Injury to testis or scrotum
How modern medicine manages infertility:
- Medications: Hormonal pills to stimulate ovulation in female and to raise testosterone levels in males and other drugs to manage erectile dysfunction. But these induced hormones in female rises many other symptoms like:
- Mood changes like anxiety, depression
- Nausea, vomiting, headache, cramps, breast tenderness
- Ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome
- Increased risk of pregnancy loss
- Multiple births
- Surgery: surgery to remove the blockage fallopian tube, removing fibroid and polyps and varicocele surgery in males etc.
- IVF (In vitro fertilization): IVF defines as the assisted reproductive technology in which the egg and sperms are fertilized outside and then transferring the fertilized egg into the uterus. But these may include various side effects such as :
- Increased risk of multiple births
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Risk of miscarriage
- Birth defects
- Egg- retrieval procedure complications
- Premature delivery
- Low birth weight baby
Managing Infertility with Ayurveda Naturally:
According to Ayurveda preparing a healthy womb is the first and fore most factor to attain fertility. There are multiple herbs and Panchkarma procedures to improve metabolism to form healthy body tissues and keep vata, Pitta and Kapha in balanced state.
Panchkarma: Panchkarma involves 5 therapies those are vaman (medicated emesis), virechana (medicated purgation), basti (medicated enema), uttar basti (vaginal or urethral enema), Nasya (admistering medications through nasal route).
