MANAGING COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME WITH AYURVEDA

A type of eye strain which develop when individual spend lots of time using smart-phones, computers or any other digital devices is known as Computer Vision Syndrome. This syndrome is quite common in today’s world, as more people relies on the digital devices, smart-phones etc for socializing and work. This condition is also called as digital eye strain. Individual might experience eye irritation, headaches, blurred vision along with other symptoms. Mostly these symptoms are temporary, but individuals normal routine and work life is affected. It can be managed by lubricating eyes, adjusting posture and correcting vision errors while using digital devices.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME?
Excessive use of digital devices leads to development of this condition. Focusing on close-up objects for longer duration can put strain on the eyes, but screen add layer of strain to eyes due to :
- Poor contrast of screen’s content against the background
- Reflections or glare bouncing off the digital screen
- Screen content being less focused or sharp
- Being too far or too close from the screen
- Taking insufficient screen beaks
- Viewing screen in low light
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME?
Certain conditions tends to increase the risk of developing computer vision syndrome in individuals. The factors includes:
- Under-corrected or uncorrected, such as near sightedness
- Dry eye disease
- Eye conditions which affect eye’s ability to focus, such as convergence insufficiency
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME?
Some of the common symptoms experienced by the individual with computer vision syndrome includes :
- Blurred vision which comes and goes
- Eye strain
- Itchy and dry eyes
- Watery eyes
- Sensitivity to bright lights
- Headache behind the eyes
- Trouble keeping eyes open
- Shoulder or neck pain and stiffness
- Backache
- Near sightedness
PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME:
- Reduce screen time
- Take at least 20 minutes break every two hours from your digital devices.
- Find a comfortable position which can helps individual to avoid straining the eyes from bending forward or stretching neck to see screen.
- Adjusting the screen brightness and contracts so that it feel comfortable to the eyes.
- Limit reflections and glares
- Make text bigger so that there is less strain on the eyes
WHAT AYURVED SAYS ABOUT COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME ?
This condition can be interpreted under the concept of Anukta Vyadhi. Due to etiological factors like atiyoga of chakshuendriya ( excessive use of eyes), mithya yoga of chakshuendriya (improper use f eyes), sooksma nirikshanat (seeing very small objects), atisammipayat (from very close distance) there is increase in vata and pitta dosha and depletion of the Kapha. This imbalance of the doshas leads to development of the symptoms like dry eyes, eye strain, blurred vision, shoulder, neck, back pain, headache etc.
Treatment of the computer vision syndrome is to avoid the etiological factors and balance out the imbalanced doshas.

1. Nerve Up Tablet
