LIVER ABSCESS AND ITS AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION:

It is defined as a pus filled mass in the liver that can develop from injury to the liver or an intrabdominal infection disseminated from the portal circulation. It is caused due to formation of germs like bacteria, parasites and fungus. Liver abscess can cause serious problem if left untreated. Infection can spread TO the liver through biliary tree, hepatic vein, portal vein or as a result of trauma.

CAUSES OF LIVER ABSCESS:

1. Abdominal infection such as appendicitis, perforated bowel and diverticulitis.
2. Infection in the blood
3. Injury to the liver.
4. Bacterial causes of liver abscess are streptococcus, Escherichia, Klebsiella species.
5. Infection in the bile duct.
6. Endoscopy of the bile draining tubes.

TYPES OF LIVER ABSCESS:

1. Pyogenic liver abscess: Pyogenic means pus.It is a pus filled pocket of fluid within the liver.
2. Amoebic liver abscess: It is the collection of pus in the liver in response to an intestinal parasite caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
3. Fungal abscess: It is due to the candida albicans and occur in person who have prolonged exposure of congenital and acquired immunodeficiency
4. Iatrogenic abscess: It is a complication of hepatic artery ligation for tumor.

SYMPTOMS OF LIVER ABSCESS:

1. Chest pain
2. Pain in right upper abdomen
3. Clay colored stools
4. Dark urine
5. Nausea
6. Vomiting
7. Jaundice
8. Fever
9. Night sweats
10. Decreased appetite
11. Weight loss
12. Pain radiating to right shoulder.

INVESTIGATION:

1. CT-scan
2. USG
3. Complete blood count
4. Liver biopsy
5. Liver function Tests

RISK FACTORS:

1. More intake of alcohol
2. Obesity
3. Type 2 Diabetes mellitus.`
4. Biliary tract disease
5. Age more than 50 years

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

1. Viral hepatitis
2. Cholecystitis
3. Cholangitis
4. Necrotic liver masses

AYURVEDIC APPROACH OF LIVER ABSCESS:

In Ayurveda it is compared with Yakrit Vidradi. The dosha located around the organ or bone tissue it gets vitiated and affects the twak, rakta, mamsa and meda and will produce swelling and gradually develops into bigger size and pus is formed inside the cavity. Vidradhi are deep located and associated with pain.
