Jaundice is a condition in which there is yellowish coloration of skin, sclera of eyes and mucous membranes of the body. The liver produces bile which is yellowish-orange in color. Bile contains bile pigments which give urine and stool its yellow color.
However, due to some reason if bile is not removed by the body properly, its amount gets increased in blood causing jaundice. Some of the other reasons for jaundice are gall stones, hepatitis and tumors.
It is very common among newborn babies. They get treated by light therapy for a day or so. In other cases of jaundice, the treatment depends on the underlying cause.
