INTRODUCTION
- Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder characterized by an underactive thyroid gland .
- A condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones .
- These hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism , energy production and growth. When thyroid hormone levels are low the body’s functions slow down.
What Causes Hypothyroidism ?
- Hypothyroidism has several causes including :
- Autoimmune Thyroiditis : The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
- Iodine deficiency
- Age : more common in women
- Medications .
- Congenital hypothyroidism
- Pituitary or hypothalamic disease
- Thyroid surgery or radiation treatment

According to Ayurveda the thyroid function is controlled by Pitta Dosha.
Pitta is responsible for all of the metabolic actions carried out by the thyroid hormones. Unhealthy foods , stress , sedentary lifestyle can deplete Agni (metabolic fire) . low metabolism leads to toxins formation and imbalances of vata and kapha Dosha . these ama and kapha dosha block the TSH (parathyroid hormone) conversion into T3 & T4 (thyroid hormones) , leading to high TSH and low T3,T4 causes Hypothyroidism.
