HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

OVERVIEW

Human papillomavirus infection is a sexually transmitted infection in which there occur growths of skin or mucous membranes. It is a viral infection which spreads from one person to another through skin to skin contact. The name of the virus is human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than 100 strains of human papillomavirus. In most of the cases, the virus does not cancer but some strains can lead to cancer of the affected part such as penis, cervix, anus, vulva and throat. Vaccines give protection against the HPV infection and also against cervical cancer. Human papillomavirus infection is mostly prevalent in sexually active individuals.

CAUSES OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

The human papillomavirus enters the body through a cut, small tear or abrasion in the skin. The virus gets transmitted by skin to skin contact. The most common reason of its cause is sexual contact. It is responsible for genital HPV infections. The virus gets transmitted from a pregnant mother to the fetus.

RISK FACTORS OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

The factors which make a person more prone to papillomavirus are:

• Having multiple sexual partners
• Weak immune system
• Unprotected sexual intercourse either vaginal, oral or anal
• Sexual partner suffering from HPV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, etc
• Prolonged use of oral contraceptives
• Intake of tobacco
• Having multiple children
• Chronic inflammation
• Injury to the skin

SYMPTOMS OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

The symptoms of human papillomavirus infection can appear years after the initial infection. Following are the symptoms of the HPV infection:

• Genital warts: These are flat and small cauliflower like bumps and have tiny stemlike protrusions. In men, the warts appear on the penis, scrotum and around the anus. In women, the warts are present on vulva, in vagina, cervix or near the anus. They do not cause much discomfort but there may be mild itching or tenderness in them. They spread from skin to skin contact.
• Common warts: These are the warts which appear on hands and fingers. These warts are rough and raised and are unsightly. They can be painful or susceptible to injury.
• Plantar Warts: These warts appear on heels or plantar area of the feet. These are hard and grainy in texture. They cause uneasiness.
• Flat warts: They can appear at any place in the body. However, in men, they tend to appear in beard area and women mostly have them on legs. They have flat tops and slightly raised lesions.
• Throat cancer
• Anal cancer
• Vaginal cancer
• Penile cancer
• Vulvar cancer
• Cervical cancer

COMPLICATIONS OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

Following are the complications which are associated with human papillomavirus infection:

• Oral and respiratory lesions like lesions on tongue, soft palate, tonsils, larynx or nose
• Cancer of the affected parts such as penis, vulva, vagina, scrotum

DIAGNOSIS OF HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION

The doctor will do a visual examination of the patient. He will take a look at the warts or lesions. He will make the patient do other tests also:

• Pap smear or cervical smear
• Visual inspection with acetic acid
• HPV test
• DNA test
• Biopsy
• Colposcopy
