Back pain is the most common problem in today’s lifestyle. Pain in the back can lead to a lot of discomforts and cause difficulty in performing day to day activities.
It affects people of any age and can happen due to various reasons. With the increase in the age the chances of developing lower back pain increases. The reasons might vary from previous occupation and degenerative slip disc disease.
Lower back strain is commonly linked to the lumbar spine ligaments around the spine, muscles of the lower back, abdominal and pelvic internal organs, discs in between the vertebrae of the spine, spinal cord and nerves, and the skin around the lumbar region.
Problems with the spine-related condition like osteoporosis can lead to back pain.
The human spine consists of a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, tendons, disks, and bones, which works together and provides support to the body. The spine segments are cushioned with cartilage-like pads which are called as discs.
In case of any problem with these components, it can lead to pain in the back. In some of the cases, the main cause of lower back ache is unknown. But other common causes like strain, poor posture, etc.

What are the causes of back pain?
Back pain comes suddenly but lasts not for more than five or six weeks, this is called as acute back pain, and this can be caused by a fall or heavy lifting.
Chronic pain in the back lasts for more than three months, but it is less common than acute lower back pain.
Here are the conditions that are commonly linked to sudden lower back pain
1) Muscle or ligament strain
This occurs due to repeated heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement that strains back muscles as well as spinal ligaments.
2) Bulging or ruptured disks
Disks act as cushions between the spinal vertebrae. These discs can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve. Sometimes there will be bulging or ruptured disk without signs of back pain.
3) Arthritis
Osteoarthritis affects the lower back, which leads to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, and this condition is called spinal stenosis.
4) Strain or injury
Back pain commonly stems from strain or injury. Most of the frequent causes of lower back chronic pain are – muscle spasm, muscle tension, damaged disks.
Activities that can lead to strains are:
Lifting heavy objects, abrupt and awkward movements, body structure related problems, etc.
5) Sciatica
In this condition pain that travels through the buttock and down towards the back of the leg which is caused due to a bulging or herniated disk pressing on a nerve.
What are the symptoms of lower back muscle pain?
The main symptom of back pain is pain anywhere in the back region, and sometimes it radiates towards the buttocks and legs.
Some back issues can cause pain in other parts of the body, and it depends on the nerves that are affected.
Other symptoms of lower right back pain can include:
- Muscle pain
- Shooting or stabbing pain in the affected area
- Pain that radiates down your leg
- Pain that worsens standing, walking or lifting heavy objects
- Pain that improves with reclining
What are the risk factors for back pain?
Some of the risk factors that develop extreme lower back pain:
Age: As the age increases, it usually starts around the age group of 30 or 40.
Lack of exercise: Weak muscles and lack of exercise might lead to sharp lower back pain.
Excessive weight gain: It puts extra stress on the back or spine, leading to spinal pain.
Disease: Some diseases related to bones like arthritis and cancer can lead to back pain.
Psychological conditions: Conditions like depression and anxiety are vulnerable to back pain.
Smoking: It reduces blood flow to the spine and unable to deliver nutrients to the back. It slows down the healing process.
What is the Ayurvedic treatment for back pain?
Panchakarma Treatment

Kati Vasti is a circular ring is made on the back area with dough, and lukewarm medicated oil is poured into it. This procedure is done to relieve lower spine pain.

It comprises of herbal ingredients like Kali Mirch (Piper nigrum), Ghritkumari (Aloe barbadensis), shudha shilajit, shudha kuchala, Giloy satav (Tinospora cordifolia), shudha vatsnabh, etc.
It shows effective results in lower backache, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, increases appetite, etc.
Recommended Dosage – Take 1 tablet twice daily with normal water.
3. Panchasakar Churna:
Panchsakar Churna is a classical Ayurvedic formulation for pain in back that consists of five ingredients named as – Balaharitaki – (Unripe fruits of Terminalia chebula), Shunti – (Zingiber officinale), Shatapushpa – (Anethum sowa), Swarnapatri – (Cassia angustifolia), Saindhavan Lavana – (Rock Salt). It eliminates the harmful toxins from the body in a natural way.
Recommended Dosage – Take 1 teaspoonful with Luke warm water at bedtime.
4. Pain-O-Kill Oil:
This herbal oil comprises of Jyotishmati (Celastrus paniculatus), Devdaru (Cedrus deodara), Kustha (Saussurea lappa), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Vatsnabh (Aconitum ferox), etc.
As the name suggests, it gives the best result in all types of pain. This oil has a good result in reducing the inflammation, treats low back pain, weakness, etc.
Method of Usage – It is applied on the affected portion of the body and massage with light pressure. Do this procedure twice a day.
5. Trikatu Syrup:
Trikatu consists of Ginger, Black pepper and Long pepper and is the best herbal remedy for digestive ailments, obesity, and high cholesterol.

Recommended Dosage –Take 2 teaspoonful twice a day before meal with normal water.
