The disease can happen to anyone at any time. Some diseases happen suddenly and some due to our habits. ‘Scurvy disease’ is one of them. If there is not enough vitamin-C diet in the food, then this disease can easily make the person a victim.

What is Scurvy ?
It is a serious disease caused by vitamin-C (ascorbic acid) deficiency. Most people believe that this disease used to happen in earlier times. Actually, seafarers used to suffer from this disease. People believe that this is a rare problem today, but through this article let us tell our readers that anyone who does not have enough vitamin-C in their diet, all of them have the disease.
Symptoms of Scurvy
Having knowledge about scurvy, it is also important to know the symptoms of scurvy. Usually its symptoms are divided into two parts. On this basis, we are also giving information about the early symptoms and later symptoms of scurvy.
- Not feeling well or unwell
- To be tired
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Diarrhea complaint
- Fever
- Joint and muscle aches
- Mild bleeding from visible pores in the skin.
Symptoms that appear late –
- Swollen gums and bleeding problems.
- Weakness of teeth.
- Inflammation or proptosis in the eye means the emergence of the eyes.
- Early skin bleeding (even in severe or mild injuries).
- Crusted, dry and brown skin.
- Wound healing slowly.
- Healed wounds rejuvenated.
- Bleeding in joints and muscles, which may cause swelling of bones of hands and feet.
- Absence of bones in infants and children.
Causes and Risk Factors of Scurvy Disease
Scurvy is a disease mainly caused by vitamin-C deficiency in the diet. There may be some other risk factors as well:
- Do not take nutritious food.
- Eating disorder means eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (anorexia nervosa – not eating for fear of gaining weight) or bulimia (bulimia – eating too much at one time).
- Any type of mental health problem, such as depression or schizophrenia (a type of mental disorder).
- Due to the treatment of a serious illness, such as chemotherapy. Side effects such as nausea or loss of appetite can be seen. As a result, there may be a change in the diet of the person, due to which the body may lack nutritious elements.
- Causes of scurvy include Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Both of these conditions can cause inflammation inside the digestive system. This can affect the ability to digest food, which can become a cause or risk factor for scurvy.
Treatment of Scurvy –
As we said, scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin-C deficiency. In this case, it is easy to talk about the treatment of scurvy. Information related to the treatment of scurvy is as follows :
Vitamin-C rich diet – If a person has common symptoms of scurvy, doctors may recommend vitamin-C rich foods to be included in the diet.
Vitamin-C supplementation – If a person has severe scurvy symptoms, the doctor may advise the patient to take vitamin-C supplements. In general, doctors may recommend taking at least 250 mg of vitamin-C supplements daily to relieve the symptoms of scurvy. This dose may change according to the age of the person and the severity of the disease. Keep in mind that vitamin-C supplements should be taken as advised by the doctor. Its wrong dosage can cause harm rather than benefits.
Depending on the symptoms – anemia is one of the symptoms of scurvy. In such a situation, if someone has also suffered from anemia with scurvy, then the doctor can treat scurvy on this basis too. It may also include diet changes, anemia medications and supplements.
Treatment based on habits – as we have already reported that some habits of the person like – smoking, alcohol consumption, eating less or more are also risk factors for scurvy. In this case, the doctor can treat scurvy keeping in mind the habits of the person. It can be suggested to make lifestyle changes.
Home Remedies for Scurvy –
Green Chillies
Green chillies contain high amounts of vitamin C. Eating green chillies is the best way to avoid scurvy. Do not use red chili for scurvy as red chilli is not as effective as green chillies.
Kiwi
Kiwis also contain high amounts of Vitamin C. Vitamin C can be replenished by using kiwi as a salad.
Amla – Indian Gooseberry
Amla also contains vitamin C. Dry gooseberry or amla juice also provides benefits in scurvy. Not only this, eating gooseberry jam is also beneficial in the treatment of scurvy disease.
Amchur Powder – Dry Mango Powder
After drying raw mango, grind it and make powder. Before eating this mango powder, eat one teaspoon everyday. It also caters to deficiency of Vitamin C in the body.
Strawberry
Strawberries are a high source of vitamin C. Eating strawberries in any form like salad, smoothies etc. gives benefit in scurvy.
Orange
Orange contains high amounts of ascorbic acid. Drink a glass of orange juice every morning. With this, the deficiency of vitamin C in the body will be fulfilled, as well as other nutrients will also be found, which will make the body healthy.
Lemon
Lemon is high in vitamin C. In such a situation, drinking lemon water every day fulfills the deficiency of vitamin C in the body. Honey can also be mixed with lemon for taste, but do not drink sugar mixed with lemonade.
Papaya
Papaya is also an extremely effective fruit in the treatment of scurvy. Eating papaya daily also reduces the deficiency of vitamin C in the body and prevents scurvy disease.
Thyme
Thyme is also highly effective for treating scurvy. Thyme also contains high amounts of vitamin C. In addition to home remedies, thyme is also used in many Ayurvedic medicines.
Bell – Wooden Apple
Belfl contains high amounts of citric acid and oxalic. By making syrup of belafal or eating it out of pulp, vitamin C deficiency is complete, which prevents scurvy disease.
Broccli
About 100 grams of broccoli contain 89 milligrams of vitamin C. In such a situation, the use of broccoli in your food also protects the body from scurvy disease by fulfilling vitamin C deficiency.
Capsicum – Bell Pepper
Capsicum also contains high amount of Vitamin C. Yellow capsicum has the highest vitamin C, followed by red and green bell peppers, respectively.
Parsley
Parsley, like coriander, also contains high amounts of vitamin C. Parsley is also used in home remedies as well as Ayurvedic medicines to prevent scurvy.
