To add up your information, frozen shoulder is also known as Adhesive Capsulitis. Frozen shoulder affects the shoulder joint. Pain and stiffness in the shoulder are the main signs of frozen shoulder. The effect may get worse and even last up to years!
Do you know the shoulder joint is made up of 3 bones which form a ball and a socket joint? The three bones include;
- Upper arm
- Shoulder blade
- Collarbone
The tissue that surrounds the shoulder joints is called shoulder capsules also gets affected.
With time the capsule becomes stiff and thick making it difficult to move. The liquid which keeps the joint lubricated lessens due to stiffness, as a result, the movement gets limited.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder
The prime symptoms of frozen shoulder are pain and hardening of bones which adds a lot of difficulty in moving the shoulder.
Your shoulder pain may worsen at night making it hard even to sleep.
Let’s have a look at the symptoms of frozen shoulder.
There are 3 stages of frozen shoulder:-
1. Freezing Stage (Painful Stage)
The movement of the shoulder becomes limited and causes pain. The duration lasts for 6-9 months.
2. Frozen Stage (Adhesive Phase)
The hardness of the shoulder increases making it more difficult to move. However, the pain lessens.
3. Thawing stage (Recovering Phase)
Thawing stage lasts for about 6 months-2 years. The level of motion may improve and the pain may decrease.
Causes of Frozen Shoulder

In Ayurveda, frozen shoulder id referred as APABHUKA. It is a disease that generally affects the ASMA SANDHI (Shoulder Joint).
Do you know which Dosha is imbalanced?
It is generated by Vata Dosha and the stiffness in your joints is related to Kapha Dosha.
You must know that the tightening and thickening of joint occurs because of following:-
- Any injury on or around the shoulder
- Excess use of joints (weightlifting)
- If you are a patient of diabetes, then frozen shoulder may occur.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cervical Spondylosis

External Causes
If you ever had an injury on the vital part of the body or around the surrounding of joint, it may increase the risk of frozen shoulder.
Internal Causes
If you’re taking in abundance bitter and constringent tasty food, the frozen shoulder may occur.
If you have any of the following diseases, the occurrence of the frozen shoulder may increase:-
- Thyroid Problem
- Tuberculosis
- Lung disease
- Breast Cancer
- Open heart disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Diabetes
Do you know 70% of patients with frozen shoulder are females! Ladies, be careful.
You should know, if you are 40 years old or more, then the occurrence of frozen Shoulder is higher in you than others.
Diagnosis of Frozen Shoulder
Diagnosis of frozen shoulder can be done in following ways:-
Physical Examination
- Degree of pain
- A movement that increases pain
- Whether the pain affects sleep or not
Medical Examination
- X-RAY: It is performed to identify the bone-related problems.
- MRI: It is used to check whether there is any damage to soft tissue.
Treatment
Medical Science
Non-Surgical Treatment: Non-steroidal Anti Inflammation Medicine NSAIDs:-
They include Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Diclofenac, and Lyser D which acts as a pain Killer.
Steroid Injection
It is injected into the shoulder joints. It decreases pain and reduces inflammation.
Surgery
Shoulder Arthroscopy: Do you know doctors cut the extra tissue which is developed in the shoulder joint capsulitis to reduce the inflammation and pain? The extra layer that causes the Frozen shoulder is cut out too so that the blood flows to all the nerve channels.
Ayurvedic Treatment
Frozen shoulder (APABAHUKA) is a Vata Dosha. You must know that the hardness of shoulder is because of Kapha Dosha.
