DEFINITION
Dry eye also known as dry eye syndrome or keratoconjunctivitis.
Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when tear’s unable to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes
Causes of dry eye
- Age : tear production tends to decrease by growing age.
- Gender : women are more likely to develop due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, menopause etc.
- Medications : antihistamines , antidepressants , blood pressure medications etc.
- Rheumatoid arthritis , lupus , scleroderma , thyroid disorders etc.
- Extended use of computers , mobiles other digital devices can reduce blinking and lead to dry eyes.
- Blepharitis (when eyelids are swollen or red)
- Using contact lenses for a long time
- Eye surgery such as LASIK
- Exposure to smoke , wind and dry climates can increase tear evaporation.
Symptoms
- Redness and irritation in the eyes
- Burning sensation in eyes
- Stringy mucus in or around eyes
- Blurred vision
- A sensation of having something in your eyes
- Difficulty in wearing contact lenses
- Difficulty with nighttime vision or driving
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)

Natural remedies for dry eyes
- Ghrita : Ghrita or clarified butter is consider as a natural remedy for dry eyes . it providing soothing and lubricating effects to the eye.
- Draksha : Grapes provide natural hydration . Draksha known for its soothe inflammation and essential nutrition like vitamin A and C.
- Triphala : This herb known for its antioxidants helps to reduce eye irritation and promote tear production . Triphala’s anti-inflammatory properties soothe the eyes, while its detoxifying effects
- Gotu kola :Gotu kola is considered as a cooling herb . It have a anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that helps to reduce dryness, redness, and discomfort in the eyes.
- Chandan (Sandalwood): Is known to have soothing and cooling properties.
- Amla : Amla is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants with having anti-inflammatory properties helps to reduce eye redness and irritation.
Lifestyle changes
1. Avoid smoking
2. Adequate sleep
3. Reduce screen time .
4. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from wind and sun exposure.
5. Keep your eyelids clean to prevent blockage of oil glands.
6. Blink regularly ; when using digital devices or during prolonged activities like reading .
7. Protect your eyes from drafts, wind and smoke as they can increase tear evaporation.
8. Stay hydrated .
9. Omega-3 fatty acids include foods rich in omega-3s like flaxseeds, chia seeds and walnuts .
