DIABETIC NEUROPATHY AND ITS HERBAL HEALING THROUGH AYURVEDA

Diabetic nephropathy refers to the resultant nerve damage that is gradually developed because of long term damage of consistent high blood sugar due to diabetes. It most commonly damages the nerves of feet, hand and legs. Some people have mild symptoms while for some patients it can be disabling. It is a serious complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes affecting at least 50% of people with diabetes.
The early symptoms might be you noticing numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in your hands or feet which indicate peripheral neuropathy. Eventually you can’t feel pain and an ulcer can develop on your foot and may be prone to various infections.

SYMPTOMS OF DIABETIC NEUROPATHY
The onset is usually insidious and firstly involves the nerves of feet. Often there is a sensation of pins and needles in your feet and other symptoms vary depending on the affected area. Common sign and symptoms include:
- Loss of sensitivity to touch
- Difficulty in coordination while walking
- Numbness or pain in hands and feet
- Burning sensation in feet, especially at night
- Muscle wasting and weakness
- Sense of fullness or bloating
- Nausea, vomiting and indigestion
- Constipation or diarrhea
- When you stand dizziness
- Decrease or increase in sweating
- Bladder problems like incomplete emptying of bladder
- Dryness in vagina
- Erectile dysfunction
- Inability to have a sense of low blood glucose level
- Double vision
- Increased heart rate
TYPES OF DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY
In people suffering from diabetes there are four main types of nephropathy:
Peripheral neuropathy
It is the most common form of neuropathy and usually affects the feet and legs but can also affect arms or hands. These symptoms can vary from mild to severe:
- Numbness
- Tingling or burning sensations
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Insensitivity to hot and cold tempratures
- Sharp cramping pain
- Weakness in muscles
- Loss of balance and coordination
These are experienced more at night in some patients and in injury you may not feel it on your foot and coupled with poor circulation in diabetes it may lead to amputation.
Autonomic neuropathy
It is the second most common type of neuropathy. It effects the autonomous nervous system which affects digestive system, sweat glands, sex organs and bladder and cardiovascular system. It affects:
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Swallowing trouble
- Gastroparesis
Delayed digestion leading to nausea and vomiting and also symptoms of hypoglycemia can go undetected.
Autonomic neuropathy may also result in sexual problems and can cause incontinence in bladder.
It can also cause a drop in blood pressure as there is damage to nerves supplying heart muscles. Although, sometimes it can cause abnormally fast heart rate also.
It can make it hard to identify some of the symptoms of a heart attack.
Proximal neuropathy
It is a rare form of neuropathy also known as diabetic amyotrophy. It is mostly in males above 50 years diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It mostly affects hips, buttocks or thighs. You sometimes may experience sudden and severe pain along with weakness i legs making it difficult to stand without any assistance.
Focal neuropathy
Focal neuropathy or mononeuropathy occurs when there is damage to one specific nerve or group of nerves. It’s symptoms include:
- Pain and numbness along with tingling in fingures
- Inability to focus
- Double vision
- Aching behind the eyes
- Bell’s palsy
- Pain in isolated areas such as the front of the thigh, lower back, stomach, inside foot,etc.
HOW CAN AYURVEDA HELP
According to Ayurveda Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of Madhumeha.
The vitiated Kapha,Pitta and Meda cause Avarana (covering) of Shuddha Vata which leads to vitiation of Dhatus (bodily elements) causing Madhumeha in person. This leads to complication such as Diabetic neuropathy. It is treated by natural herbs whiuch help in rejuvinating the tissues.

It cleanses and moistens the mucous membranes, kills bacteria and fungi, thin mucus and stimulates its flow, shrinks swelling in the mucous membrane of the sinus. Anu tailam is very refreshing and can be used for mental fatigue also. The base oil of Anu Tailam is Sesame oil and other ingredients like– Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Brihati (Solanum indicum), Chandan (Santalum album), Mustaka (Cyperus rotundus), etc. It possesses anti-bacterial properties and eliminates the excess mucus from the nasal cavity and balances adequate secretion of mucus.
Recommended Dosage – Put 2-3 drops of Anu tailam in each nostril.
Jeevantyadi Ghrita:
Jeevantyadi Ghrita is an ayurvedic formulation that is known to be prepared from the mixture of fruitful herbs. The ghee is used as a base for this formulation. This is known to control aggravated pitta and eye problems. Helps in Eye problems like cataract in early stages, Pitta related diseases.
Recommended Dosage – Quarter to half teaspoon with water, before food, one to two times a day.
For eye ailments – take with triphala churna after dinner.
Vata Balance Tablet:
Vata balance tablet is a rejuvenating blend of herbs is specially formulated to balance Vata doshas without aggravating Pitta or Kapha doshas. It may be used to support overall health and well-being by Vata constitutions with or without food. For those with a dual constitution that includes Vata or a tridoshic constitution, it is an excellent formula for the Vata season, which in most parts of the world is autumn and early winter.
Recommended Dosage – Take 1 tablet twice a day with normal water.
