Introduction
Diabetes Mellitus which is commonly known as Diabetes is a disease which starts when the blood sugar which is also called as “Blood Sugar” is high from the normal range. Blood Sugar is the actual source of energy which is obtained from the food we eat. A hormone namely Insulin, is secreted by the pancreas, which helps the glucose pass into the cells and therefore to be used for energy. When glucose is present in high quantity, it can cause various health problems.
Diabetes can hit anyone. Worldwide, diabetes has been striking more than 422 million people. The leading cause of Renal Failure, Cardiac Arrest or Failure and blindness is Diabetes.
The most common Types of diabetes is
- Type 1 Diabetes
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Apart from the above listed types, the other type of diabetes is Gestational Diabetes which is seen occurring mostly during pregnancy.
Symptoms of Diabetes
The effect and symptoms of diabetes are different in men and women. Among women, the death rate is higher. The composition of diabetes is different to diagnose in women because hormones and inflammation work quite differently in women.
Let’s take a look at the symptoms of women
Some symptoms may be common in men and women, whereas most of the symptoms are unique to a woman only.
Unique Symptoms
Vaginal Infections and Vaginal Thrush: Vaginal Infections and Vaginal Thrush are caused by the presence of high growth of fungus. Such infections are common in women. Symptoms like itching, swelling near crotch, vaginal discharge are a sign of infection. The infections take place due to the presence of high quantity of glucose in the blood.
Urinary Infections: Among women, the risk of Urinary Tract Infection is higher because of diabetes. The infections can cause severe pain while urination, passing out of blood and nebulous urine. One must treat the infections on time otherwise it can lead to Renal Infection. Due to poor circulation of White Blood Cells, UTI is a common symptom in women suffering from diabetes. The white blood cells kill infection as they surpass through the blood.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): When Adrenal Gland starts producing higher level of male hormones, PCOS occurs. Signs of PCOS are as follows:-
- Irregular Periods
- Weight Gain
- Acne
- Depression
In severe cases, PCOS can lead to infertility.
Symptoms experienced by both men and women are
- Blurred Vision
- Increased Thirst
- Nausea
- Numbness in hands/feet
- Irritability
- Fatigue
- Skin Infection
Treatment of Diabetes
Modern Science
A large number of people have died before 1920s as there was no medication for diabetes. If diabetes is untreated, it may lead to Ketoacidosis (breakdown of fats). The aim is to reduce blood glucose level to normal range. This can be checked by the measurement of HbA1c. Values of HbA1c level should be near to normal range. The most common applied treatment for diabetes is:-
Insulin Therapy: When a diabetic patient becomes unable to extract insulin from itself, the body requires therapy. Insulin therapy demands regular injections for the hormone, which may vary as per the condition of individual. Patients who have been recommended Insulin may also need to take care of their diet, with respect to their daily activities.
Ayurvedic View on Diabetes
Diabetes is known as Madhumeha in the world of Ayurveda. Madhu is derived from the root “MANA” and Meha has been derived from the word Miha which means Vachaspathyam (Excessive Excretion). According to Ayurveda, diabetes is one of the 20 reasons for urinary disorders. If any urinary disorder is ignored, it may end up causing diabetes.
