Constipation is a condition in which a patient has fewer than three bowel movements per week. The stools are dry, hard and lumpy. Patient feels pain or difficulty in passing stools. The bowel movements often occur less than normal. The time between bowel movements varies in different individuals. Some people go for three times a day whereas others just go for a few times a week.
It is not a very serious problem. People at some point of their life experience it. But when prolonged, it can interfere in their daily tasks. Chronic constipation can cause people to strain excessively and thus can lead to various other problems such as hemorrhoids, anal fissure, etc.
According to Ayurveda, any disease occurs in body due to imbalance of vata, pitta and kapha dosha in the body. Constipation is called VIBANDHA in Ayurveda. It is caused due to imbalance of vata dosha. Vata dosha is responsible for movements and thus elimination of body wastes from the body. A disturbance in it causes dry and hard stools leading to difficulty in its passage.
