Communicable diseases are the illness that spread from one person to another or from animals to a person or from a surface to a person or from a food.
PATHOGENS:
- Bacteria :
A large group of single cell organism are responsible for illness such as Strep throat, Tuberculosis, Whooping cough, Urinary tract infections, E.coli, Clostridium defficile.
- Viruses:
A very simple Microorganism that infects cells and may cause disease. Diseases that is caused by viruses are HIV, HepatitisA, B, C, Measles.
- Fungi:
A plant like organism that does not make chlorophyll. Many skin diseases such as ringworm and athletes foot is caused by fungi. Fungi can infect your lungs or nervous sytem.
- Parasites:
A organism that lives on or in host organism and gets its food from or the expense of its host. Examples of parasitic diseases are malaria, chagas disease, toxoplasmosis, Guinea worm disease.
- Prions:
Prions refer to abnormal, pathogenic agents that are transmissible and are able to induce abnormal folding of specific normal cellular proteins called prions. Mad cow disease, Fatal familial insomnia, kuru are the diseases caused by prions.
TRANSMISSION OF DISEASE:
- Physical contact with an infected person through touch sexual intercourse, droplets, Faeco-oral route.
- Bites from infected insects or animals.
- Disease can be transmitted to the unborn child through placenta or during passage through the vaginal canal during the birth process.
- Contact with contaminated surface or object, food, blood or water.
- Spread through air.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
- Fever
- Jaundice
- Fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Joint pain
- Clay colored stool
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Loss of appetite
- Rashes
- Nasal congestion
COMMON COMMUNICABLE DISEASES:
- Chicken pox: It is the infection caused by varicella zoster virus. It causes itchy blister like rash all over the skin.
- Tuberculosis: The main cause of tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These bacteria usually attack the lungs but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine and brain.
- Hepatitis: It is the inflammation of the liver. Inflammation is swelling that happens when tissues of the body are injured or infected. It can damage your liver
- HIV: Human immune deficiency is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If HIV is not treated it can lead to the AIDS.
- Covid-19: It is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. The main symptoms of covid-19 are fever with chills, cough, shortness of breathe, Loss of taste or smell, headache, Fatigue, sore throat, Nausea or vomiting, Diarrhea.
- Ebola: It is a disease that is caused by ebola virus. It commonly effects people and non human pirates such as gorillas or monkeys.
- Malaria: It is the disease that is caused by parasites by the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquito. Fever with chills, headache, muscle ache and tiredness are the common symptoms of malaria.
- Measles: It is an acute viral respiratory illness. It is characterized by malaise, cough, coryza and conjunctivitis. The rash usually appears about 14 days after a person is exposed.
- Syphilis: It is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacterium Treponema Palladium. The disease starts from a painless sore typically on the genitals, rectum or mouth. It spreads from person to person via skin or mucous membrane contact with these sores.
- Influenza: It is an infection of nose, throat, lungs which are part of the respiratory system. It is commonly called flu. Fever, Chills and sweat, Dry cough, Shortness of breathe, Tiredness and weakness, eye pain are the symptoms of influenza.
- Typhoid: It is caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi. It is usually spread through contaminated food or water. Fatigue, Nausea, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea.
RISK FACTORS:
- Infants under the age of 2 years.
- Older adults who are 65 years of age or more than 65 years.
- People who have low immune system
- Overcrowding
- Tobacco use
- Physical inactivity
- Unhealthy diet
- More use of alcohol.
PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASE:
- Strict personal hygiene
- Use boil drinking water
- Early detection of cases.
- Immunize against infectious diseases
- Clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces.
- Eat cooked food
- Avoid touching wild animals
- Wash hands properly
- Stay at home
INVESTIGATION:
- Serum bilirubin
- Serum aminotransferase
- Serum creatinine
- Stool and body fluid electron microscopy.
- Prothrombin time.
