INTRODUCTION
Adenomyosis is a condition in which the endometrial tissue grows in the muscular wall of uterus. The endometrial tissue acts normally during each menstrual cycle. It grows thick, breaks down and bleeds during monthly cycle. Uterus consists of three layers – perimetrium, myometrium and endometrium. Myometrium is the muscular wall of uterus and causes contraction and relaxation of uterus. Endometrium is the innermost lining of uterus and is responsible for monthly menstrual flow. When the endometrium grows in the muscular wall, then the uterus gets enlarged. Uterus becomes twice or thrice the normal size. However, the exact cause of its occurrence is not known. Heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain and sex during intercourse are some of the common symptoms of adenomyosis.
The treatment involves certain medications and surgery. With good eating habits and healthy lifestyle, it can be managed or prevented.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ADENOMYOSIS?
The specific cause of adenomyosis is not known. However, there are some of the reasons which can be responsible for adenomyosis:
- Uterine incision
- Deposition of endometrial tissue in the wall of uterus during its formation in fetal stage
- Inflammation of the uterine lining before childbirth
- Hormonal imbalance
- Invasion of uterine muscle by the bone marrow stem cells
