OVERVIEW

Shingles is an infection which is caused by varicella zoster virus. Varicella zoster virus is also responsible for chickenpox infection. Shingles is also known as herpes zoster. In this, skin rashes occur which is characterized by shooting pain. The virus affects a single sensory nerve ganglion and the nerve which supplies the skin surface. It can present on any part of the body. The skin rash usually affects one side of the body in a single stripe of blisters either present on the left or right side of the body. The rashes mostly disappear within 3 to 5 weeks.

Shingles is not life-threatening but it is very painful. Even after the clearance of blisters, the pain of shingles persists. Vaccines of shingles help in lowering the risk of contracting shingles. They reduce the risk of developing complications. There are medications also which help in the management of shingles.

CAUSES OF SHINGLES

Shingles is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster virus. This virus also causes chickenpox. A person who has developed chickenpox can also develop shingles. A person after recovery from chickenpox enters the nervous system and remains dormant for years. Sometimes, it reactivates and travels along the nerve pathways, producing shingles.

Leprosy is also known as Hansen’s disease. It is a skin infection which is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. It is a slow growing bacterium which may takes upto 20 years for skin infection. The bacteria affect the skin, nerves, eyes and mucosal lining of the nose. It is a contagious and fatal disease. The nerves which get affected become swollen underneath the skin. The affected area loses the ability to sense pain and touch. The color of the area gets changed. It either becomes dark or light. There is reddishness due to inflammation of the skin.

If leprosy is not treated, it can cause nerve damage leading to paralysis of hands or feet. Blindness and corneal ulceration can occur if facial nerves get affected.

CAUSES OF LEPROSY

Leprosy is caused by slow growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae. It gets transmitted by the droplets released due to coughing or sneezing. It spreads by close contact with the infected person. However, the casual contacts like hugging, shaking hands or sitting next to each other do not cause transmission of the leprosy.

TYPES OF LEPROSY

Leprosy is of different types depending on the type of sores:

Tuberculoid leprosy: It is a mild form of leprosy. In this, only a few patches of deformed skin occur. The affected part becomes numb because of the nerve damage. It is less contagious than others.
Lepromatous leprosy: There occurs large no. of skin rashes and skin bumps. Kidneys, reproductive organs are also involved. Muscle weakness and numbness is present.
Borderline leprosy: In this, symptoms of both tuberculoid and borderline leprosy occur. It is the most severe form of leprosy.

Skin problems varied in symptoms and severity. Some skin problems are temporary other can be permanent. They can be painless or painful. Skin problems are greatly related to aging, genetics, hormones, allergic reaction or sun exposure or toxic chemicals. Some skin problems are minor, and others can be life-threatening. While most skin problems are minor, others can indicate a more solemn issue.

Let’s come in know the most commonly noticed skin problems here:

ACNE (ACNE VULGARIS)

The most common skin disorder is acne (acne vulgaris) and caused by blocked hair follicles and oil glands of the skin.
In addition, it can be triggered by hormonal fluctuations.

Acne treatment is crucial because acne left untreated can often lead to permanent scars and dark facial spots.

ECZEMA (ATOPIC DERMATITIS)
