INTRODUCTION
Blepharitis is a medical condition in which there occurs inflammation of the eyelids. It usually affects both eyes and difficult to dealt with. There are present tiny oil glands near the base of eyelashes which lubricates them and provide nourishment. When due to some reason, these oil glands get clogged, there occurs inflammation and redness of eyes. They are very uncomfortable and unsightly. The edges of eyes become red, swollen and dark. However, it is not contagious and doesn’t cause permanent damage to the eyes.
One should maintain proper eye hygiene and when infected, there are several medications which can be very helpful in its management.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF BLEPHARITIS?
There has not been found any exact cause of blepharitis but if there is any problem in meibomian glands, then it can be responsible for blepharitis.
Following are the reasons which can be responsible for blepharitis:
- Eye infections
- Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff)
- Clogging of oil glands of eyelids
- Rosacea
- Allergies
- Dryness in eyes
- Mites in eyelashes
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF BLEPHARITIS?
There are some factors which make a person more vulnerable to blepharitis. Following are the risk factors of blepharitis:
- Wearing contact lenses
- Suffering from diabetes
- Having oily skin
- Living in dry areas or spending a lot of time in air conditioners
- Exposure to environmental pollutants like dust, chemicals, etc
- Not removing makeup
- Hormonal changes
- Certain medications like anti-cancerous drugs, etc
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BLEPHARITIS?
The common signs and symptoms of blepharitis are:
- Swelling of eyelids
- Itching in eyes
- Burning sensation in eyes
- Redness and pain
- Formation of crust on eyelashes and eyelid corners
- Irritation in eyes
- Excessive formation of tears in eyes
- Blinking of eyes
- Increased light sensitivity
- Flaking of skin around eyes
- Blurred vision
- Sticking of eyelids
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS WHICH ARE ASSOCIATED WITH BLEPHARITIS?
Blepharitis is difficult to treat and thus, often leads to some complications. Following are the several complications of blepharitis:
- Formation of scar tissue on eyelids
- Falling of eyelashes
- Stye
- Abnormal growth of eyelashes
- Recurrent conjunctivitis
- Formation of chalazion
- Corneal injury
HOW BLEPHARITIS CAN BE PREVENTED?
With some of the steps, blepharitis can be kept at bay. Following are the preventive measures of blepharitis:
- Applying warm, wet cloth as a compress
- Do not rub eyes
- Using castor oil on the inner margin of affected eyelid
- Clean eyelids twice a day
- Using protective eye gear
WHAT ARE THE NATURAL WAYS TO TREAT BLEPHARITIS?
Here are some of the natural ways by which blepharitis can be managed:
Aloevera: It has anti-inflammatory properties and is anti-bacterial in nature also. It helps in reducing inflammation, swelling and redness of eyelids.
Rose water: It is one of the best natural remedy for blepharitis. It gives cooling effect and reduces inflammation of the eyelids. Put a few drops of rose water in each eye daily.
Honey: It is having great medicinal properties which are very beneficial for eyes. It is rich in anti-oxidants and fights free radicals. It soothes eyes and prevents inflammatory reaction in eyelids. Apply some honey on eyelids twice a day.
MANAGEMENT OF BLEPHARITIS WITH THE MEDICATIONS OF CHANDIGARH AYURVED CENTRE
Here are some of the medications of Chandigarh Ayurved centre which are used for the treatment of blepharitis:
1. Nerve Up Tablet
Nerve up tablet is a herbo-mineral tablet and is purely ayurvedic formulation. CAC Nerve up tablets help in balancing the vata doshas. It reduces kapha dosha, and acts as nervine stimulant. It shows effective results in improving the central nervous system. It contains natural ingredients like shudha kuchala, shudha shilajeet, praval pishti, shankh bhasma etc. These contains natural vatahar properties and helps in curing vata diseases.

4. Roshani Eye Drop
Roshani Eye Drop is pure Ayurvedic formulation used in problems like frequent travel, work on a computer, and lack of sleep. This eye drops contains herbal ingredients like Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Bhringraj (Eclipta alba), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Shwet Chandan, Rakta chandan, Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Haridra( Curcuma longa), Gulab (Rosa damascena), Adrak (Zingiber officinale), Bahera (Terminalia bellirica), Pudina (Mentha spicata), Saindhavan lavan, Phitakari, etc. This eye drop soothes up the eyes, prevents infections and clears off particles in the eyes, improves vision.
Dosage: Put one drop in each eye in the morning and at bed time.
5. Triphla Syrup
Triphala Syrup ancient herbal remedy contains equal parts of three herbs like T. Chebula, T.bellirica rox, and E. officinalis. These ingredients are very beneficial for digestive system, maintain bowel wellness, helps in abdominal bloating, and flatulence. Triphala Syrup is tridosha hara. It is used to detoxify the body and support the immune system. It is known for its antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral abilities. It is prescribed for treating fatigue and gastric distress, pneumonia, constipation, vaginal infections, piles and eye problems.
Recommended Dosage– Take 1 tablespoon twice a day.
