- According to Ayurveda science, there are two main concepts of disease management – shodhana and shamana, where shaman takes care of imbalances in the body and shodhana expels the accumulated toxins from the body.
- Panchakarma treatment comes under the shodhana chikitsa.

FIVE BASIC CLEANSING METHODS
These five karmas are as follows
- Vamana (therapeutic emesis)
- Virechana therapeutic purgation)
- Basti (medicated enema)
- Nasya (nasal administration of medicine)
- Rakta Moksha (bloodletting)
VAMANA KARMA –
In this therapy the purification of stomach is done by using drugs that induce vomiting, this is called vamana karma. kapha Dosha is aggravated in basant Ritu (spring); therefore, therapeutic emesis (vamana) is indicated in spring (basant) season (month of March and April).

VIRECHANA KARMA
Virechana is the classical Ayurvedic purgation therapy. This therapy is the best choice to eliminate the toxin produced by aggravated Pitta dosha.
Sharad Ritu (autumn) is a season for Pitta Prakopa and virechana (therapeutic purgation) has a significant role in controlling features of Pita Prokopa in sharad ritu.

It is a part of Panchakarma treatment, in this procedure medicated oil is administered into both nostrils to remove accumulated kapha toxins from head and neck region. Nasya karma should ideally be carried out in Grishma Ritu (summer), Sharad (autumn) and Varsha Rutu (rainy) during morning time when the sky is clear.

Blood is considered an important dhatu in Ayurveda. Due to the impurities of blood, many ailments start to develop in the body. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the impurities of blood from the body. This technique of treating by removing contaminated or infected blood from the body is called “Raktamokshana”. Month of September / October (Sharad) is the best season for the treatment of Raktamokshana in healthy and normal persons.
