What is blood Sugar?
Blood sugar is also known as glucose running down the blood of a person. Food we eat is a source of sugar inside the body. This sugar breaks down into a simpler form, glucose which is stored in the body and utilized when needed. Insulin, a hormone released by pancreas helps the body’s cell in uptaking glucose, essentially turning it into energy. Blood sugar is an energy source for the body cells to work properly or we can say that glucose is a fuel for cells. Carbohydrates require a lot of insulin whereas proteins trigger less insulin further less insulin is required by fats to deal with the blood glucose.
High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) in the blood is a diseased condition called Diabetes. Blood sugar levels should be in a safe range to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Having too much low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is also a serious problem.
What is the normal glucose level?
Blood glucose level changes throughout the day. Blood glucose increases after eating food and within an hour levels settle down. Blood sugar is at its lowest before the first meal of the day called fasting blood sugar (FBS). Normal fasting blood sugar level is 99 mg/dl or lower, 100-125 mg/dl falls into prediabetes and more than 126 mg/dl indicates high blood sugar or diabetes.
