AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR STOMACH ULCERS

DESCRIPTION
Painful sores or ulcers develop in the lining of the stomach known as peptic ulcers. It may also develop in first part of the small intestine. A thick layer of mucus membrane protects the stomach lining from the effect of digestive juices. People who frequently take pain relievers medicines are more prone to develop ulcers.
PEPTIC ULCERS INCLUDE:
Gastric ulcers – occur inside the stomach
dDuodenal ulcers – occur inside the upper portion of small intestine known as duodenum.
CAUSES
- Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
- Pain-relieving NSAID medications.
H. pylori bacteria
- H. pylori commonly infects the stomach.
- The H. pylori bacteria present in the layer of mucus membrane in digestive tract and cause inflammation which can cause break down of protective lining and create problem because stomach contains strong acid for food digestion without the protection of mucus layer the acid can eat stomach tissue.
Pain relievers
- Pain relievers medicines are major cause of peptic ulcer disease. NSAIDs a group of medications used in relieve pain.
These medicines can wear the mucus layer in the digestive tract and have the potential to cause peptic ulcers include: - Aspirin
- Naproxen
- Ibuprofen
- Not everyone who takes NSAIDs will develop ulcers.
- People infected with H. pylori and frequently used NSAIDs are more prone to damage mucus layer.
Rare causes
- Being seriously ill from various infections or diseases.
- Having surgery.
- Taking other medications, such as steroids.
- Peptic ulcer disease can also occur if people have a rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome where acid-producing cells form tumour in the digestive tract and these tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous.
SYMPTOMS OF AN ULCER
Common ulcer symptoms include:
- Discomfort between meals or during the night in duodenal ulcers
- Discomfort when you eat or drink during gastric ulcer.
- Stomach pain that wakes you up at night
- Feel full fast
- Bloating, burning or dull pain in your stomach
- The discomfort lasts for minutes or hours
If ulcer becomes torn it becomes a bleeding ulcer. This can cause the following symptoms:
- Nausea
- Vomiting blood
- Unexpected weight loss
- Blood in your stool or dark stools
- Pain in your back
RISK FACTORS
- Smoke – Smoking increase the risk of peptic ulcers in people who are infected with H. pylori.
- Drink alcohol – Alcohol irritate the mucous lining of stomach and increases the amount acid production in stomach.
- Untreated stress – it may increase the chance of ulcer by irritating mucous membrane.
- Eat spicy foods – cause inflammation in stomach lining, if people already infected with H. Pylori.
COMPLICATIONS
- Internal bleeding – Bleeding leads to anemia severe blood loss may require hospitalization or a blood transfusion. Severe blood loss may cause black or bloody vomit or black or bloody stools.
- Perforation in stomach wall – Peptic ulcers can eat a hole through the wall of stomach or small intestine.
- Obstruction – Peptic ulcers can block the food passage of the digestive tract cause fullness, vomit and people lose weight either through swelling from inflammation or through scarring.
- Gastric cancer – Studies found that people infected with H. pylori have an increased risk of gastric cancer.
