OVERVIEW:-

Excessive discharge of a white, sticky, foul-smelling material from the vagina is called Leucorrhoea. This common problem cause unhygienic conditions, infection of the genital tract
In Ayurveda, Leucorrhoea is known as sweta pradar, where Shweta means ‘white’, and Pradar means ‘discharge’. Leucorrhoea treatment in Ayurveda is more effective because it evaluates all aspects and identify the root-cause.

SYMPTOMS:-

Symptoms project to underlying disease and thus should be diagnosed as early as possible. Some symptoms of Leucorrhea are following:-

Itching in the vulva.
Extremely sore vulva.
Abnormal vaginal discharge.
Foul-smelling discharge
Thick yoghurt-like discharge, which is yellow.
Vaginal bleeding between two menstrual cycles.
Painful intercourse
Bleeding during or after intercourse.
Painful urination.
Vaginitis
Skin growth around the vaginal area.
Intense swelling of the vagina.

CAUSES:-

The most common causes of Leucorrhea include:

Pregnancy, menstruation or premenstrual periods, and uterine congestion.
Inflammations in female genitals.
The use of chemical contraceptives, intrauterine devices, and other mechanical factors cause infections and itching.
High stress, anxiety, sexual tension, and other mental problems.
Hormonal imbalance.
Unhealthy diet, immoderate use of sedatives.
Health conditions such as tuberculosis, anemia, etc.

TYPES OF LEUCORRHEA:-

There are three main types of Leucorrhoea among women:-

Inflammatory Leucorrhoea:-

Generally a sign of bacterial infection, the vaginal mucus becomes swallowed in this type of Leucorrhoea, resulting in yellowish colour and an odour in vaginal discharge.

Parasitic Leucorrhoea:-

In this type of Leucorrhoea is caused due to the presence of trichomonas vaginalis – is a parasite and symptoms occur intense vaginal itching and thick, yellow vaginal discharge.

Physiological Leucorrhoea:-

In this leucorrhoea is not much to worry about. Generally occurring during the pregnancy stage, it is caused by an increased blood flow to the vagina due to agaravated estrogen levels in the body.

DIAGNOSIS:-

Doctor may perform the following tests: –

Pelvic exam:- It involves doctor examining the vagina and cervix by putting pressure on the uterus and ovaries to find out abnormalities in the tissue and organs.
pH test:- It determines the acid level of the discharge, because infections can cause changes in the pH of the vagina.

Doctor examines a sample of discharge to look for a yeast, bacterial, or trichomonas infection.

STD testing :-It involves taking a sample of the discharge and send it to a lab to test for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas or other organisms that are responcible for discharge.

PREVENTION:-

Vaginal discharge may be stopped by following these steps:-

After using the toilet, always wipe from front to back. It may help prevent bacteria from rectal area into vagina.
Wear cotton underpants during the day. Don’t wear underpants at night.
Avoid wearing tight pants, pantyhose, swimming suits, biking shorts, or leotards for long periods.
Change your laundry detergent or fabric softener if you think it may be irritating your genital area.
The latex in condoms and diaphragms and the sperm-killing gels that are used for birth control can be irritating for some women.

HOME REMEDIES FOR LEUCORRHEA:-

Several types of remedies help to cure white discharge. These includes:-

APPLE CIDAR VINEGAR SOLUTION:- ACV has antifungal properties which restore the pH balance of your vagina. It also increases the growth of healthy bacteria. It helps to cure white discharge problem.
PROBIOTICS:- PROBIOTICS like yoghurt contain the healthy bacteria Lactobacillus. It helps to fight infectious bacteria which causes the white discharge.
ALOE-VERA:- Aloe vera helps cure excessive white discharge and treats yeast infections with its antifungal properties. Its intake increases white blood cells, which in turn boosts immunity to fight yeast infection internally.
GREEN TEA:- Green tea is high in antioxidants. It immunises the body and gives it strength to fight infections, helping treat white vaginal discharge or Leucorrhoea.
FENUGREEK SEEDS:- It helps to balance pH levels in the vagina and acts as a natural immune booster. It help in problem of excessive white discharge.

However, in some cases, vaginal discharge is a sign of infection. When the discharge is green or yellow, has a bad smell, linked with pain, itching, and inflammation, it is known as excessive or abnormal vaginal discharge.

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF LEUCORRHEA:-

In ayurveda, each individual is born with 5 elements of nature which are Earth, Air, Water, Fire, and Space. The balance of these elements is known as Dosha.
There are 3 main doshas- Vata (energy of movement, composed of space and air), Pitta (digestion and metabolism composed of fire and water), and Kapha (structure and lubrication, composed of water and earth). Symptoms of abnormal or excessive leucorrhoea will appear according to the involved dosha. They are:-

If vata dosha is involved, then discharge is pink, frothy, thick, less, and associated with pain
In pitta pradar, discharge is yellow, dark, heavy, and associated with a burning sensation
In kapha pradar, discharge is pale and sticky, along with itchiness

Leucorrhea causes due to vitiation of kapha doshas which get aggravated due to kapha aggravating food leads to vitiation of rasa dhatu presenet in vaginal track.
