- ‘Sanskara’ in sanskrit means rites which are performed by a human being during the various stages of his life. It is a sacred ceremony. According to the theory of karma, these are the behavioral characters shown by an individual in his journey of life. Some of these traits are formed when a person is in his mother’s womb while some are developed by him over his lifetime.
- These sanskaras have an impact on the person’s subconscious mind. They make a person’s nature. Sanskara varies in number in different traditions. There are 40 sanskaras in Gautam Dharmasutra whereas in Grihasutra, they are 16 in number.
- 16 sanskaras are known as Shodash sanskara. First sanskar is Garbhadaan sanskar. It means the intent of having a child by the couple.
WHAT IS GARBHADAAN SANKARA?
- ‘Garbha’ means foetus and ‘sanskar’ means attaining or educating the child. It is the ceremony performed by the couple before conception. In Ayurveda, it is believed that the child’s mental and behavioral development starts in the mother’s womb. The mother’s happy or sad mood affects the baby’s psychological development.
- Garbhadan sanskara is present in India since Vedic period. There are many examples where mothers are blessed with the baby of their choice by receiving blessings from the rishi munis.
- It is scientifically proven that mother’s thoughts can lead to hormonal secretions in her body which affect the baby. Garbhadaan sanskara can make a mother feels positive and thus leads to healthy development of the baby.
- In today’s world, the number of mental health disorders are increasing rapidly. It is very necessary for a person to have mental toughness to survive in this world. According to the ancient text, our times is known as Kalyug. All kinds of bad activities, breakdown of relations, lack of affection for our near or loved ones are occuring in this period. Such activities also occurred in the previous yugas but in kalyug, they will reach to its maximum. It is very necessary for the person to have good principles so that he can traverse his life’s journey with peace.
- A child always learns from his parents. They are his guru. What a father or a mother does or tells his child, he will do the same. So they should do good karmas, for their child to be physically and mentally healthy. They can clean their baby’s karma by maintaining good deeds before conception. It has an effect on genetic environment of the child. This will make his behavior or nature.
- In Hindu tradition, there are many examples of how garbhadaan sanskar had a positive effect on some of the most famous mythological characters like Abhimanyu, Prahlad, etc. They attained enlightenment in mother’s womb with garbhadaan sansakra.
- Everyone wants a healthy child. Garbhadaan sankara is not focused solely on the child, it works on the mother also. There are various activities like lifestyle and diet changes which are recommended to the mother in garbhadaan sanskara. A healthy and positive mother can definitely bear a healthy child.
WHEN TO START GARBHADAAN SANSKAR
- It is started one year before conception. The couple will perform celibacy or brahmacharya for purification of their bodies. By making their bodies pure, they can call good souls in the womb.
- Garbhadan sanskara covers prenatal, natal and breast feeding phases of the mother. They guide parents until 2 years of the birth of the child.

- This condition can occur in any bone or can affect any joint, but most commonly it affects the ends of long bones, like the end of the femur (where it connects to the hip). This condition is also referred to as aseptic necrosis, ischemic bone necrosis and osteonecrosis.
At-home treatment options
In addition to medications or other therapies for AVN, there are some at-home treatments that can help to reduce symptoms and prevent further bone damage.
Rest
It is very essential to take proper rest or give rest to the affected bone or joint. Sports or activities that put extra stress on the joint, like running, football, basketball, volleyball etc., all should be avoided. Some Low-impact exercise like swimming or yoga can be possible. Avoid putting extra weight on the affected joint.
Plan your meals and snacks
Be conscious about your meals and snacks ahead of time. You can make diet plan with the help of dietician. Some like to plan for a whole week. Plan your meals and snacks so that you have something to get to when you are hungry. Healthy eating is very important. You can avoid eating highly processed, high fat, high sugary food that is not good for overall well-being. Add more whole grains, fresh fruits, and green leafy veggies that are anti-inflammatory foods to your diet.
Temperature therapy
When there is joint pain, application of ice or heat may help to reduce pain. Heat stimulates blood supply to the bone, increases range of motion and reduces stiffness in painful joints. Ice numbs painful joints and reduces inflammation.
Physical activity
Some type of physical exercises are helpful to maintain or improve the range of motion in an affected joint. Regular exercise for half an hour daily will help to improve blood circulation in your body. Doing yoga poses can also be good option.
Things to Avoid
- Avoid alcohol. Heavy drinking can be risk factor for developing AVN.
- Cholesterol control. Extra amounts of fat in your body can obstruct the blood supply to your bones.
- Don’t smoke. It increases your AVN risk.
- Use steroids carefully. Use of steroids over and over again can worsen bone damage.
Risk factor reduction
Many Dietary and lifestyle factors are associated with avascular necrosis. Decrease alcohol intake, lowering high cholesterol levels and Avoid smoking may help to prevent the AVN from worsening or from developing in other parts of the body.

What is Avascular Necrosis?
- Avascular necrosis is a condition in which death of bone tissue occur due to a lack of blood supply. It is also known as osteonecrosis; it can lead to tiny breaks in the bone and leads to bone collapse.
- Dislocated joint can interrupt the blood supply to a section of bone. Avascular necrosis can also be caused due to use of high-dose steroid medications for long time.
- Anyone can be affected with AVN, but it’s commonly seen in people between the ages of 30 and 50.
Symptoms of AVN
- Symptoms are not seen in people in the early stages of avascular necrosis. As this condition worsens, affected joint may get hurt only when you put weight on it.
- Pain can be mild to severe and usually develops gradually. Pain might center on the groin region, thigh or buttock. Besides the hip, other areas that are likely to be affected are the shoulder, knee, hand and foot.
- Some people develop AVN on both sides (bilaterally) — such as in both hips or in both knees.
Causes of AVN
Main cause of AVN is the reduced blood flow to a bone. Reduced blood supply can be caused by:
- Any trauma to Joint or bone. An injury or trauma to joint may damage nearby blood vessels.
- Fatty deposits in blood vessels. The fat (lipids) can block small blood vessels that reduce the blood flow to the bones.
- Certain diseases. Medical conditions, like sickle cell anemia and Gaucher’s disease, also diminished blood flow to bone.
Risk factors
Risk factors for developing avascular necrosis include:
- Trauma
- Steroid use
- Bisphosphonate use
- Excessive alcohol use
- Certain medical Conditions
- Diabetes
- Pancreatitis
- Gaucher’s disease
- HIV/AIDS
- Sickle cell anemia
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
Complications
- If avascular necrosis is not treated properly then it worsens with time. Eventually, the bone can collapse. Due to avascular necrosis bones loses its shape that leads to severe arthritis.
Prevention
There are some preventive measures that will help to reduce your risk of developing avascular necrosis and improve your general health. These are
- Keep cholesterol levels low
- Avoid alcohol
- Limit steroid use
- Avoid smoking
Diagnosis
Doctor can make diagnose by doing physical exam and certain investigations.
