An anal fissure is defined as a small tear in the anal part that can cause pain and/or bleeding. They affect both men as well as women equally and both the young as well as the old.
The main symptoms of an anal fissure are painful bowel movements that persist for hours, and less often bright red colored bloody stool. People may try to avoid having a bowel movements due to the pain.
Anal fissures are usually due to constipation, i.e., passing a hard and dry stool which tears the fragile skin at the anal outlet. When this condition occurs, the fissure is considered to be “acute anal fissure” and if the symptoms persist for weeks or months, it can be chronic anal fissure(means it presents for a long time or recurring frequently).
In Ayurveda, anal fissure is correlated with “Parikartika” and the pain is characterized by “kartanvat shool”. It is mainly caused due to the vitiation of Vata and pitta dosha. For local applications, madhura, sheeta, and snigdh dravyas are used.
What are the causes of Anal fissure?
Anal fissures are most often caused by damage to the anal part. Most of the time, stretching and tearing can occur when a person passes hard stools.
Fissures are usually caused due to trauma in the inner lining of the anus from a bowel movement. This is because of a hard and dry bowel movement or loose, frequent bowel movements.
Patients with a tight anal sphincter muscle are more prone to develop anal fissures. Other common causes include inflammatory bowel disease, anal infections, or tumors or a sexually transmitted infection such as anal herpes infection.
What are the symptoms of an anal fissure?
The main symptom of the Anal fissure is a sharp pain that starts with the passing of stool and may last for several minutes to a few hours. As a result of fear of pain, the patients may try not to have bowel movements.
Other symptoms include:
- Bright red colored bloody stool or on toilet paper after a painful bowel movement
- Formation of a small lump or skin tag on the affected skin near the anal fissure. This symptom is more common during chronic infection.
Some preventive measures
- Firstly you have to avoid constipation and keep the stools soft
- Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods that are found in vegetables, fruits, cereals, wholemeal bread, etc.
- Drink plenty of water. Adults should drink at least two liters (10-12 cups) of water/fluids per day. Most of the fluid will pass as urine. However, some of it is passed out in the gut that keeps the stool soft.
- Don’t ignore the feeling of passing the stool because people suppress this feeling and put off going to the toilet until later. It may result in the formation of bigger and harder stools which are more difficult to pass.
What are the risk factors for anal fissure?
Here are some of the factors that may increase the risk of developing an anal fissure include:
- Constipation is the main risk factor because of straining during bowel movements and passing hard stools which increases the risk of tearing.
- Anal fissures are more common in women after they give birth to a child.
- Crohn’s disease causes inflammation of the intestinal tract which may make the lining of the anal canal more vulnerable to tearing.
- Anal intercourse.
- Anal fissures can occur at any age, but it is more common in infants as well as middle-aged adults.

Is there any Permanent Treatment of Thalassemia?
- March 6, 2020
- Posted by Dr. Vaidya Karanvir Singh
- 0 Comment(s)
Thalassemia is an inherited condition affecting the blood and causes the body to produce less hemoglobin. There are various types of thalassemia which may vary from a mild condition having no symptoms, to a life-threatening condition.
If you have mild symptoms then you might not need treatment. But it is more severe than it might require regular blood transfusions.
According to Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, Thalassemia is called as ‘Beejdushtijanya Vikara’. The main causes are Vishamaavastha of Doshas (humor), Dhatu (body constituents), and Mala (waste products) which can lead to vitiation of the three doshas.
Vitiation of pitta dosha (pitta dominant body humor) affects the functioning of Raktavaha Srotasa (microchannels of blood and its indices) which ultimately affects the process of formation of Rakta Dhatu and produces Raktavikriti (abnormality of blood indices). Persistent production of Vikrita Rakta Dhatu leads to various symptoms resembles with Tridoshajanya Pandu.
What are the causes of thalassemia?
The main cause of thalassemia is an inherited (genetic) change which involves the mutation in the DNA of cells that produce hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen in the blood which gives blood its red color.
The mutations associated with it are passed from parents to children. Hemoglobin is located in red blood cells which is part of the blood. The body tries to produce more hemoglobin which thereby produces more red blood cells this overproduction mode causes more symptoms as well as complications.
Depending on its type, the amount of abnormal hemoglobin may vary. This is mainly what determines the severity of thalassemia. There is also the involvement of other factors.
What are the different types of thalassemia?
1. Alpha-thalassemia
Four genes are involved in producing the alpha hemoglobin chain. You get two from each of your parents. If you inherit:
- In One mutated gene, there will be no signs or symptoms of thalassemia. But the person may be the carrier of the disease and can pass it on to the children.
- In Two mutated genes the signs and symptoms of thalassemia will be mild. It might be called an alpha-thalassemia trait
- In three mutated genes the signs and symptoms will be moderate to severe.
- Inheriting four mutated genes is usually rare which results in stillbirth. Babies born with this condition often die shortly after birth or require lifelong transfusion therapy.
2. Beta-thalassemia
- In this condition, two genes are involved in making the beta hemoglobin chain in which the person gets it from each of the parents. If you inherit:
- In One mutated gene, the patient may have mild signs and symptoms and this is called thalassemia minor or beta-thalassemia.
- In Two mutated genes, the signs and symptoms will be moderate to severe and it is called thalassemia major, or Cooley anemia.
Babies born with these defective genes may develop signs as well as symptoms within the first two years of life.
In mild form, there is another condition called thalassemia intermediate may also result from two mutated genes.
What are the symptoms of thalassemia?
Ideally, thalassemia will be diagnosed and treated early to prevent symptoms and reduce complications related to it. If left untreated then symptoms of thalassemia usually start at around age 4-6 months.
These includes:
- Slow growth in children
- Brittle or wide bones
- Enlargement of the spleen (an organ in your abdomen that filters blood and fights disease)
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Pale or yellow-colored skin
- Dark-colored urine
- Poor appetite
- Heart-related problems
In some of the people these symptoms show up at birth but some of the people who have thalassemia may never show any sign at all.
How thalassemia is diagnosed?
The diagnosis can be made by a blood test. In this test, the blood sample is analyzed to see which type of hemoglobin is present in the blood. In some cases, other tests such as DNA (genetic) tests are helpful to diagnose the type of thalassemia.

The Kidneys and Urinary System
The kidneys are the fist-size organs of the urinary system that balances the body’s fluid.
Most of the people normally have two kidneys, one on each side of the spine behind the liver, pancreas, and intestines.
Healthy kidneys work by eliminating the harmful wastes from the blood and pass out in the urine. These organs maintain the levels of sodium, potassium, and calcium in the blood.
Other parts of the urinary tract are- ureters, urethra, and bladder. Kidneys produce urine from water and the body’s waste products.
This urine travels down through the ureters into the bladder, where it gets stored and then it is excreted through the urethra.
A kidney stone is a solid mass that is made up of tiny crystals. There may be single or multiple stones in the kidney or ureters at the same time.
In all these, calcium stones are the most common. They are likely to occur in men between the ages of 20 to 30. This calcium combines with the other substances to form kidney stones.
Oxalate is also the most common of these and is present in various foods such as spinach. It is also found in various vitamin C supplements. Diseases of small intestine increase the risk of this type of kidney stones.
According to the Ayurveda aspect, ashmari which is caused due to the vitiation of vata dosha appears like kadamba. It is also known as the vrukkashmari(vrukk is kidney and ashmari is stone).
Pitta dosha type of ashmari is like stone and smooth.
Kapha dosha type ashmari is soft and resembles like hens egg or like the color of the honey.
CAUSES
Kidney stones may be caused due to the following causes:
- Crystallization of the chemicals and minerals present in urine leads to chronic kidney stones
- Urinary tract infection
- Blockage of the urinary tract
- Due to overdosage of vitamin D
- Due to mineral imbalance
- Kidney disease
