Kidneys are responsible for filtering the excessive fluids and waste products from the blood which is then eliminated in the urine.
Chronic kidney failure refers to the loss of functioning of kidneys over months or years.
In advanced stages, there is a backup of dangerous levels of wastes and fluids in the body. This condition is also called chronic kidney disease.
The term “chronic kidney disease” refers to the long-lasting damage to the kidneys that can get worse with time.
If the damage is very worse, then the kidneys may stop working. This condition is also known as kidney failure, or end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
What is the Ayurvedic view of Chronic Kidney Disease?
In Ayurved, chronic kidney diseases come under “Vrikk Roga” in which there is an imbalance in the tridoshas (Vata, pitta, and Kapha) which causes an accumulation of ama in the strotas.
What are the causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD)?
Anyone can get chronic kidney disease. Some people are more at risk than others and there are several causes that increase the risk for CKD include:
- Diabetes mellitus: too much glucose level in the blood can damage the tiny filters in the kidneys
- High blood pressure (hypertension): With time, high BP can put a strain on the small blood vessels in the kidneys and stop the proper functioning of kidneys.
- Heart-related disease or high cholesterol: There is a build-up of fatty deposits in the blood vessels supplying the kidneys, which can make it harder for them to work in a proper manner.
- Having a family member with kidney disease
- Being over the age of 60 years or old
- kidney infections
- glomerulonephritis – kidney inflammation
- Polycystic kidney disease – This is an inherited condition where abnormal growths called cysts develop in the kidneys.
- Blockages in the flow of urine – Such conditions are kidney stones that keep coming back or an enlarged prostate.
- Long-term use of certain medicines – Medications such as lithium and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are also the main cause.
What are the stages of chronic kidney disease?
Changes in the GFR rate assess the stages of advanced kidney disease is. In the UK, and other countries, the stages of chronic kidney disease are classified as follows:
- Stage 1 – In this stage, the GFR rate is at a normal range. However, evidence of kidney disease has been detected.
- Stage 2 – In stage two, the GFR rate is lower than 90 milliliters, and evidence of kidney disease has been detected.
- Stage 3 – GFR rate is lower than 60 milliliters in this stage, and regardless of whether evidence of kidney disease has been detected.
- Stage 4 – GRF rate is lower than 30 milliliters, and there is regardless of whether evidence of kidney disease has been detected.
- Stage 5 – In this, the GFR rate is lower than 15 milliliters and renal failure has occurred.
Most of the patients with chronic kidney disease rarely progress beyond Stage 2.
It is important for kidney disease to be diagnosed and treated early which prevents the serious damage.
What are the symptoms of kidney failure?
There are one or more of the following symptoms if the kidneys are beginning to fail such as:
- Itching
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea and vomiting
- Not feeling hungry
- Swelling in your feet and ankles
- Too much urine (pee) or not enough urine
- Trouble catching your breath
- Trouble sleeping
If the kidneys stop working suddenly then it is acute kidney failure, and you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:
- Abdominal (belly) pain
- Back pain
- Diarrhea
- Fever

- Rashes
- Vomiting
Having one or more symptoms may be a sign of serious kidney problems.

Diarrhea is the frequent passage of loose and watery stools with or without abdominal pressure and cramps.
It is commonly referred to as gas or flatulence. It is one of the most common illnesses in all age groups as the main cause of lost days of work or school.
People of all age groups can suffer from the condition, and the average adult has one episode of acute diarrhea per year.
The main cause of severe illness is the loss of fluids and electrolytes. The fluid passes out of the body before it is absorbed by the intestines.
When it is unable to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss due to which diarrhea is impaired, this results in dehydration.
Diarrhea is generally divided into two types:
- Acute
- Chronic
Acute diarrhea is a condition that lasts from a few days up to a week.
Chronic diarrhea can be defined in several ways, but it usually lasts for more than three weeks.
There’s another type which is known as traveler’s diarrhea. It happens when there is diarrhea after being exposed to bacteria or parasites while on vacation in a developing nation.
What is the Ayurvedic view of Diarrhea?
In Ayurveda, diarrhea is referred to as “Atisara”. As per the doshas, Atisara has been classified into 6 types– vataj, pittaj, kaphaj, sannipatik, bhayaj, and shokaj types.
Vataj atisara is mainly caused by Vata dosha and is marked by painful loose stools with gases and sounds.
In Pittaj atisara there is a vitiation of pitta dosha and passing of stools with a burning sensation and offensive odor.
Stool in kaphaj atisara is sticky, oily, and whitish with a foul odor. Sannipatik atisara is caused due to the vitiation of three doshas and have mixed characteristics.
Bhayaj and Shokaj atisara is caused due to fear as well as grief.

The passage of red-colored stool suggests intestinal bleeding and could be a sign of a more severe infection.
The passage of thick and tarry black stools suggests significant intestinal bleeding.
The stools appear green in color because it passes through the intestines faster than the usual.
Some of the people call it “intestinal flu” or “stomach flu.”

Purines are produced normally in the body and are also found in some foods and drinks like liver, anchovies, mackerel, dried beans and peas, and beer. All these can lead to uric acid problems in the body of a person. Mostly, uric acid dissolves in blood and travels to the kidneys. From there, it filtered out into the urine or passes through your intestines to regulate “normal” levels of uric acid. Not only it can cause chronic kidney disease but affects the overall health of the individual. If the body produces too much uric acid or does not remove enough of it, you can get sick. Excessive production of uric acid in the blood is known as hyperuricemia. Normal Uric acid levels in females are 2.4-6.0 mg/dL and 3.4-7.0 mg/dL in males. Our immune system does a remarkable job against disease-causing microorganisms and defends them amazingly. But in certain circumstances, it fails.
A disease-causing germ successfully invades into the body and makes a person sick. So in this situation, the certain question arises i.e.
Is it possible to intervene in this process and boost your immunity?
How can we improve our diet? Are vitamins or herbal preparations to build up immunity?
What lifestyle changes should be taken for building up a perfect immune response?
A person may possess chronic low immunity. From an Ayurveda point of view, the human body is made up of seven tissue layers or dhatus which is responsible for our immunity.
These layers of tissue known as Rasa (lymph), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Medha (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (semen/reproductive tissue. The final essence of these seven tissues is known as ojas.
Ayurveda offers a natural way to maintain a healthy body. The tridoshas vata, pitta, kapha are known as energies of the body.
In Ayurveda, there is a theory of immunity known as beej bhumi theory, which means seed and land.
In this case, the body is related to land while the infections are related to the seed.
If there is an accumulation of ama in the body and the body is lacking the ojas , then the infection will find the fertile ground in the same way as the fertile land will sprout the seeds.
If the digestion is strong and ojas is there, then the seeds of infection will not affect the body just like infertile land will not sprout the seeds.
When the seasons change, the susception of respiratory infection increases.
Body function differently in cold and hot seasons and digestive fire can fluctuate irregularly. One should follow a healthy lifestyle and diet for strong immunity.
Immunity is the quality or state of being immune we can say a condition of being able to resist a particular disease especially through preventing the development of pathogenic microorganisms or by counteracting the effects of its product.
Whole immunity system consists of special cells, protein, tissue, and organs which defends people against germs and micro-organism every day. This type of infectious disease is called immunity.

What is rheumatoid arthritis (RA)?
Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease which means that the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake and causes inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected parts of the body.
This RA disease mainly attacks the big joints, mainly affects joints in the hands, wrists, and knees.
The joints that are affected with rheumatoid arthritis cause there is a lining of the joint which becomes inflamed and damages to the joint tissue.
Hence, it can cause chronic pain in joints, unsteadiness (lack of balance), and deformity.
It can also affect other tissues throughout the body and affects various organs such as the lungs, heart, and eyes.
Prevalence
- This disease varies from 0.5% to 1.5% of the total population.
- It mainly affects more women than men
- The onset of the disease occurs between the age group of 30 to 55
- It also shortens life expectancy by several years in both men as well as women.
Ayurvedic view of Rheumatoid Arthritis
In Ayurveda, Rheumatoid Arthritis is considered as ‘’Amavata’’. In this disease, there is a vitiation of Vata Dosha and accumulation of Ama in joints which can lead to the production of pain, swelling in joints, stiffness, tenderness, etc in the related joints.
Common Symptoms for arthristis include Jwara (pyrexia), Aruchi (anorexia), Akarmanyata (inability to do work), Angamarda (body ache), Alasya (lethargy), Apaka (indigestion), Asyavairasya (altered taste perception), Daurbalya (weakness), Gaurava (heaviness in the body), Trishna (increased thirst), Utsahahani (laziness), Daha (burning sensation), etc.
What are the causes of rheumatoid arthritis?
Nobody knows what is the main cause of the immune system to malfunction. But it involves multiple factors, including both genetic and environmental influences.
Immune cells play a crucial role in the pathogenesis, although the relative contribution of individual components remains uncertain. It occurs when an immune system mistakes the body’s healthy tissues for foreign invaders.
There is a proliferation of cells in the synovial layer of the joints which destroys cartilage, bone, and surrounding soft tissues.
This leads to inflammation in joints and can be treated with Ayurvedic treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis.
What are the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis?
In Rheumatoid Arthritis, the symptoms usually affect the same joints on both sides of the body.
Symptoms usually tend to come and go. During a remission, they can be mild. However, but during a flare, they can become severe.
- Affected joints become swollen, inflamed, painful, and stiff. Synovial fluid may accumulate which causes an effusion.
- Joint pain is usually more prominent and more which mainly occurs during rest or at night, and on activity.
- Prolonged early morning stiffness is also a main diagnostic feature suggestive of inflammatory disease in joints.
- There is a general feeling of being unwell or fever
- Loss of function and mobility
- Weight loss and weakness may be the symptom
What are the risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis?
People who are at a higher risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis illness may include:
