What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy or fatty substance found in the blood for building up of healthy cells in the body.
But a high level of cholesterol in the blood can increase the risk of heart disease.
There is a deposition of fatty deposits in the blood vessels due to the high cholesterol levels which makes it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries.
Sometimes, those deposits break down suddenly and form a clot which leads to a heart attack or stroke.
What is Hypercholesterolemia?
The fat and cholesterol you eat get absorbed in the intestine. It is then transported to the liver where it gets convert fat into cholesterol and releases cholesterol into the bloodstream.
There are two types of cholesterol: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol).
High levels of LDL cholesterol are linked to atherosclerosis in which there is an accumulation of cholesterol-rich fatty deposits in arteries.
This can cause arteries to become narrow or blocked, causes the slowing or stopping of blood flow to vital organs, especially the heart and brain.
People who have high levels of HDL cholesterol are less likely to develop cardiovascular disease. But in both cases, a patient might need effective treatment.
What are the causes of Hypercholesterolemia?
Various causes such as inactivity, high-fat diet with increased intake of animal protein, too little consumption of fiber from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, obesity, Tobacco smoking, Excess alcohol consumption, and an unhealthy diet leads to high cholesterol levels.
Genetics, lifestyle, and associated health conditions also play a major role in increasing cholesterol levels. These may vary according to age, gender, and other considerations.
Various health-related conditions are Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Hypertension, Kidney disease, Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Obstructive sleep apnea, etc.
These causes are unable to remove LDL cholesterol from the blood efficiently or it may cause the liver to produce too much cholesterol.
What are the symptoms of Hypercholesterolemia?
Most of the people with high cholesterol have no symptoms until cholesterol-related atherosclerosis causes significant narrowing of the arteries. A blood test is done to check if you have it.

What is hyperthyroidism?
The thyroid is a small and butterfly-shaped gland located just in front of the windpipe (trachea).
It produces two primary hormones tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) that control the functioning of cells for the use of energy.
The metabolism is regulated by the thyroid through the release of these hormones.
Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid and it occurs when the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormones (T4, T3, or both).
Having too much production of these hormones, it can cause problems such as your heart rate and body temperature and also affects the muscles, bones, and menstrual cycle.
What is the Ayurvedic aspect of hyperthyroidism?
According to Ayurveda, it occurs due to the imbalance in “Agni” metabolic fire. As per the symptoms of thyroid, there is an involvement of both pitta and Vata dosha.
This imbalance of the doshas leads to hyperthyroidism. Impairment in the digestion causes blockage in the microchannels that imbalances the functioning of the thyroid gland.
This blockage leads to the accumulation of harmful toxins (ama) in the strotas which causes an alteration in the functioning of the thyroid gland and leads to the overactive of thyroid.
Prevalence:
Hyperthyroidism can affect anyone, but this disease is more common in women than in men, and it usually happens between the age group of 20 and 40.
This condition can be correlated to Graves’ disease that affects the thyroid gland because of the body’s weak immunity.
What are the causes of hyperthyroidism?
Various conditions in the body can cause hyperthyroidism such as Graves’ disease. It is an autoimmune disorder that causes antibodies to stimulate the thyroid for secreting excess of hormones.
It tends to run in families, which is also a genetic cause. Consult the doctor if your relatives have had this condition.
Other causes of hyperthyroidism include:
- Plummer’s disease
- Intake of excessive iodine, a key ingredient in T4 and T3
- Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid), which causes an overproduction or leak out of T4 and T3 out of the gland
- Tumors of the ovaries or testes
- Benign tumors of the thyroid or pituitary gland
- Intake of large amount of tetraiodothyronine through dietary supplements or medications
- Thyroid gland showing larynx and trachea
What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

The kidneys are the fist-size organs of the urinary system that balances the body’s fluid.
Most of the people normally have two kidneys, one on each side of the spine behind the liver, pancreas, and intestines.
Healthy kidneys work by eliminating the harmful wastes from the blood and pass out in the urine. These organs maintain the levels of sodium, potassium, and calcium in the blood.

This urine travels down through the ureters into the bladder, where it gets stored and then it is excreted through the urethra.

Kidney stones are also called renal calculi, these are solid masses that are made up of crystals.
Kidney stones are small in size but can grow larger, even filling the inner hollow structures of the kidney.
Sometimes these stones do not cause any symptoms and remain in the kidneys for a longer period.
These renal stones travel down through the ureter (the tube between the kidney and the bladder) and reaches the bladder from where it is passed out of the body through the urine. When it gets stuck in the ureter, it blocks the flow of urine through the kidney and causes pain.

A response or reaction to an immune system by substances that is usually not as harmful is termed as an allergy. It’s often termed as atopy. It is the body’s adverse reaction to a particular food or substance.
Allergen:
Any substance or product that triggers an adverse or allergic reaction is termed as an allergen.
The most common allergens include pollen, mold, house dust mites, and pets. An allergy happens when the body’s defense system reacts to an allergen and results in conditions like an infection. Antibodies are
Seasonal allergies occur due to an adverse reaction to food, environment, medicine, and cosmetics.
The best method for relieving seasonal allergies is to provide immediate treatment to fight against allergy-causing allergens.
According to Ayurveda, allergies originate due to the imbalance of the doshas or bio-energetic principles that maintains the overall function of our body and mind.
The main aim is to treat the root cause which is responsible for allergic reactions.
It is very essential to boost internal immunity besides treating the external cause by measures like a healthier diet, some common immunity-boosting herbs, lifestyle, and certain rejuvenating remedies.
Balancing the Doshas
It’s important to know your doshas type as well as their imbalanced state as a person’s primary doshas, or state of mind-body constitution predict the type of allergy which can affect the person.
Due to the imbalance of various doshas, there are different types of allergy symptoms occur. By knowing this, we can more particularly guide the treatment of relieving seasonal allergies.
Kapha Allergy Symptoms
In Ayurveda, the typical allergy symptoms due to Kapha doshas occurs in the spring season – the symptoms like congestion, watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing – results due to an accumulation of the Kapha doshas, which is composed of earth and water elements.
This results in a feeling of “heaviness” and the formation of excessive mucus in the head and sinuses. Few other symptoms are sluggishness and tiredness.
One can practice a traditional yogic nasal cleansing system termed as Jalneti.
This self-practice involves clearance of nasal passages by using saltwater with a Neti Pot, which looks like a small teapot with a, particularly long spout.
This helps to maintain the pressure inside the head and although it seems to be uncomfortable at first, with practice it’s become easy.
Other treatments include
usage of pungent and bitter (astringent) natural herbs and spices to reduce Kapha which include ginger, pepper, cayenne basil, cardamom, cumin, sage, turmeric, and cinnamon.
The easiest method is drinking hot honey water, or ginger lemon or green tea. Another classical herbal treatment to reduce Kapha is trikatu, which should be taken regularly.
Also, one can be geared towards lightening techniques such as daily exercise and the use of a dry sauna.
Pitta Allergy
When allergy symptoms occur during summers, the underlying cause is imbalanced Pitta doshas.
Pitta is composed of elements like water and fire, and in the summer, due to excess heat inflammation occurs in the respiratory tract or skin.
These symptoms include rashes, headache, inflammation in the sinuses or airway (sinusitis, bronchitis) and burning or red eyes.
To pacify Pitta doshas that result in allergy symptoms, Ayurveda recommends taking cooling herbs, such as coriander and cilantro. Besides, herbs like Guduchi, Amalaki, and neem can also be helpful.
Intake of clarified butter, or ghee, as well as aloe vera, can calm the inflammatory effect that is typically due to Pitta imbalance. These herbs have healthy anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support the immune system of the body.
Vata Allergy Symptoms
When Vata doshas get vitiated, the allergic symptoms include headache, sneezing, wheezing and generalized muscle pain.
These may be seen more typically in winters when the air becomes cold and dry.
This is due to the accumulation of lighter elements like space and air in the mind-body physiology. Other symptoms of this Vata imbalance include dry cough, restlessness, and dry eyes.
To balance the excess Vata doshas, it is important to remain hydrated and drink warm liquids, such as ginger tea or honey water.
To bring Vata back into balance, one can use calming herbs such as ashwagandha, which also acts as an immune modulator that calms the immune systems of body against allergens.
Another useful method in calming Vata is performing a self-massage or abhyanga.
Here are 10 Ayurvedic approaches to stop allergies –
- Use a neti pot technique daily, or twice a day, with weak saline or salty solution and distilled water, to loosen up the heaviness of Kapha doshas, or earth and water energy, in the sinuses. This also helps clear out pathogens that stick to the mucus membranes.
- Practice Nasya: Dab a few drops of sesame oil spiked with eucalyptus or camphor in each nostril about an hour after practicing neti pot to treat rhinitis.
- Take the Ayurvedic formulation trikatu, a combination of long pepper, black pepper, and ginger, before meals execrate the Agni (digestive fire).
- Avoid cold, heavy foods and beverages, including dairy products, wheat flour, meat, leftovers, sugar, processed foods, and iced beverages, as they slow down the digestive system and dampen the Agni.
- Go on a Kapha pacifying diet: Eat warm, natural, light, cooked foods that get digested easily. Focus on fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Cook the raw vegetables with a small amount of ghee (clarified butter) or olive oil to lubricate the mucus membranes.
- Use warming spices like cinnamon ginger, black pepper, cumin, turmeric, and cayenne in your cooking.
- Enjoy ginger or lemon or green tea throughout the day, as it sparks a digestive fire.
- Take Triphala tablets before sleep to get rid of excess toxins from the body that slow down the digestion. The Ayurvedic trio of Amalaki, haritaki, and bibtaki, fruits, helps to cleanse and strengthen your immune system.
- Develop a daily pranayama routine that includes Dirgha (Three-Part Breath), Bastrika (Bellows Breath), Ujjayi (Ocean-Sounding Breath)and Kapalabhati (Skull-Polishing Breath).
- Exercise for 30 minutes daily or so, to help stimulate Agni and eliminate ama doshas. This can be a fun fitness class, brisk walking, a vinyasa yoga class, a bicycle riding, a hike, or a dancing or Zumba classes.

What is diabetes mellitus?
Did You Know…
Blood “sugar” really means blood glucose.
Diabetes mellitus is the immune-related disorder in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are high because the body is unable to produce enough insulin to meet its necessary needs. Diabetes damages the nerves and causes a sensation problem.
Diabetes occurs in one of the following situations:
The pancreas (an organ behind your stomach) is not able to produce little insulin or no insulin at all. Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone that is produced by the beta cells of the pancreas.
What is an Ayurvedic View of Diabetes Mellitus?
In Ayurveda, diabetes mellitus is correlated with ‘’Madhumeha’’ (Hyperglycemia) in which a person passes honey-like (sweet) urine. In Ayurveda, there are 20 types of Prameha (Urological disorder).
It occurs due to the excessive use of Amla (sour), guru (heavy to digest), navannapana (food preparation from newly harvested grains), Snigdha (unctuous), Asya sukha (sedentary lifestyle), etc.
The aggravated Kapha dosha leads to disturbance in Kapha primarily which is associated with Pitta.
This imbalance of doshas move towards Medo dhatu (fatty tissues) which affect fat metabolism, lead to a further imbalance of kleda.
Hence, all kleda accumulates in the urinary system and there will be increased production of urine leading to excessive urination, gradually leading to Prameha.
What are the types of diabetes?
There are mainly two types of diabetes mellitus:
Type 1 diabetes mellitus
Type 1 diabetes occurs because the beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas are damaged.
In this type, the pancreas produces little or no insulin, so sugar cannot get into the body’s cells for use as energy.
People must use insulin injections to control their blood glucose levels. It is the most common form of diabetes in people who are under the age of 30, but it can also occur at any age. Some of the people with diabetes are diagnosed with type 1.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
In type 2 diabetes the body doesn’t produce enough, or the insulin does not work properly.
Most of the people are suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus. It occurs most often in people who are above the age of 40 but can also occur even in childhood if there are risk factors regarding this.
Sometimes, it can be controlled with a combination of diet, weight management, and exercise.
Other types of diabetes are gestational diabetes (high blood glucose level during pregnancy), surgery, use of certain medications, and various illnesses.
What causes diabetes?
The main cause of diabetes mellitus is not known. The following causes that may increase your chance of getting diabetes:
- Family history of diabetes mellitus
- Being overweight or obese
- Physical stress (like surgery or any chronic illness)
- Use of certain medications, like steroids
- Injury to the pancreas due to infection, tumor, or surgery
- Autoimmune diseases
- High blood pressure
- Abnormal blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels
- Age (risk increases with the age)
- Smoking
- History of gestational diabetes
Scientists believe that an environmental factor such as viral infection or a nutritional factor causes the immune system to destroy the insulin-producing cells.
It is important to know that sugar itself does not cause diabetes. Eating a lot of sugar causes tooth decay, but it does not cause diabetes mellitus.
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
The symptoms of diabetes include:
- Increased thirst
- Increased hunger (especially after food intake)
- Dryness in mouth
- Frequent urination or excessive urination
- Unexplained loss of weight (even though you are eating and feel hungry)
- Weakness or feeling tired
