Dr. Vaidya Karanvir Singh is the younger Vaidya in Chandigarh Ayurved & Panchakarma Centre. He is the fourth generation in his family who is practicing as a general consultant in Ayurved & Panchakarma treatment at Chandigarh. COBALT METAL

Cobalt is hidden in the substances and objects we use every day. It is used prominently in batteries, blue paint and many medical practices. We have been using it for thousands of years but it did not get the respect it deserved until the 18th century. This element, consisting of 27 protons and electrons, is established in the periodic table along with other transition elements between iron and nickel. Transition elements are those that have the properties of the front and rear group elements and act as a bridge between the two groups. Interesting fact about cobalt metal are :- 

  1. Pure cobalt is not found in natural form on Earth – we can find cobalt anywhere – in soil, in minerals, even in the crust of the foothills of the seas, but it is always present in other elements such as nickel, copper, iron or arsenic. Along with the brightly colored sindoori mineral salts are found in the form of erythrite. It is obtained as a byproduct of mining while removing other metals. In its pure form it resembles a shining gray metal
  2. Cobalt is not a rare metal but is valuable – Cobalt is very common metal but it has been included in the list of rare materials by the European Union as there are very few places on earth from where it can be extracted by mining in large quantities. Its only major mine in the world is in Morocco, from which only cobalt is extracted.
  3. Cobalt is named after a demonic character – many centuries ago miners in the mountains of Germany used to sorely throw some ores to obtain silver and copper. During this work, poisonous gases were released from the rocks, which made them sick and sometimes even died. They blame this on a mythical character, Kobold, who was famous in legends as a demonic force residing in Hades. Although the arsenic present in them was behind the gas and smoke coming out of the ores, but when the cobalt also started getting from those ores, the old name was associated with this metal.
  4. Cobalt was obtained in pure form in the 18th century – During 1730, Swedish chemist George Brandt identified and refined cobalt into an ore of arsenic. Some 50 years later, another Swedish chemist, Torbern Bergman, testified that the metal that Brand obtained was an element. It would be important to know here that our understanding of the elements was very limited in those days and they were not presented in any meaningful table.
  5. Cobalt produces a very beautiful dark blue color – People have been using cobalt-containing pigments since the third century BCE to add a dark blue color to the decoration. The Iranians used it to create beautiful necklaces. For thousands of years, artisans from Egypt to China used its minerals to give the glass a blue color. For a long time people kept believing that this blue color was due to the bismuth element because information about cobalt was not available.
  6. But cobalt does not produce only blue color – the famous blue color of cobalt is due to its compound cobalt aluminate. Cobalt compounds, when combined with other elements, produce a variety of colors. Cobalt phosphate gives violet color. Cobalt oxide gives a beautiful green color when combined with zinc oxide.
  7. We make powerful magnets and super-alloys with cobalt – Cobalt is included in some elements which are called ferromagnetic. This means that it exhibits magnetic properties in the presence of an external magnetic field. Cobalt can hold magnetism even at very high temperatures, which can cause it to be used in generators and hard-drives. Cobalt, when mixed with certain metals, forms alloys called superalloys. These super-alloys maintain their strength even at very high temperatures and pressures. Due to this property they are used in the manufacture of jet engines. This super-alloy can also be found in any rechargeable battery in our house.
  8. Cobalt can replace precious metals in industries – Yale University chemist Patrick Holland is researching the possibility of using cobalt in place of rare and valuable metals in industry. These metals are used as catalysts in industries because they increase the intensity of reactions. They are used in making adhesives, lubricants, medicines etc. These metals like platinum and iridium are good catalysts but very expensive and rare. They also have some adverse effects on the human body. This is the reason that scientists are trying to use metals like iron, nickel and cobalt in their place. These three metals can make the work of industries easier in future.
  9. Modern medical science is incomplete without cobalt – cobalt metal has an important place in the center of the chemical composition of vitamin B12. That is why it is called cobalamin. This vitamin helps in the formation of red blood cells and DNA and keeps our nervous system healthy. Vitamin B12 is special in the case that it is the only vitamin that contains the atom of the metal element (cobalt). To measure the level of vitamin B12 in patients, doctors use a version of vitamin B12 in which the cobalt atom is replaced with the isotope of radioactive cobalt. Cancerians and technicians use radiation emitted from cobalt isotopes in some cancer therapies. This radiation is also used in sterilizing medical and surgical tools. These days cobalt alloys are also being used to make fake bones of the hip and knees.

 

Patient Story – Parvati, Suffering from ulcerative colitis

A middle age lady Parvati with 55 years of age visit our clinic ( Chandigarh Ayurvedic Centre ) with a pale and dull face .She looks depressed and malnourished . While giving the history of her she started crying because of the suffering  she is facing due to her illness. She told in her history that the disease started 3 years back when she suddenly noticed blood and mucous along with the loose stool . She first didn’t understand what had happened to her and doesn’t pay much attention towards the illness but the worry start when she noticed same for 3 to 4 days with increase in stool frequency with crampy abdominal pain. Patient Story – Jaspreet Kaur, Suffering from ulcerative colitis

Jaspreet Kaur, a 30 year old young lady who is native of Gurugram.Her problem of ulcerative colitis began in the month of June 2018, when she felt that she had upset stomach. Patient Story – Akash, Suffering from Ulcerative colitis

Akash is 18 year old boy, studying at school, he some time feels some abdominal issues like indigestion loose stool , one day he was school when he had few loose motion and his parents got him some local medicines from nearby medical store. Loose stool is temporary cured by medication.

Patient Story – Ramroop, Suffering from Joint Pain

A 75 years old male patient Ramroop visit our clinic ( Chandigarh Ayurved Centre ) with difficulty in walking . He has a very sad face with felling of pain all over his joints . He gave history of his disease and said that the pain starts 2 years back with knee joint which was mild with mild difficulty during standing . He doesn’t thought of any serious illness or complication of disease . He tried several home remedies and had some relief . But the pain aggravate with time after some time and no relief with the remedies . He then tried some of painkiller without any visit to doctor . After some days he noticed that he become habitual of taking the painkiller without which he couldn’t able to walk properly . After completion of panchakarma therapy for 2 weeks he had 80% relief with no difficulty in walking and less pain . Procedure–The selected herbal drugs are collected and pounded to a fine powder form in a khalvayantra and add the required quantity of water to make a thin paste. The paste is applied to the whole body for a certain period. After the paste gets dry, it is removed with clean cotton and a warm bath is given to the patient. For moisturizing, aloe vera gel is applied to the whole of the body.

8 Patra Potli Pinda Sweda :-  Patra Pinda Sweda is known as Elakizhi, and is described as a form of sweat therapy prepared from herbal ingredients such as the leaves of medicinal plants. Different leaves are selected for this procedure depending on the disease to be treated and the dosha involved in causing the disorder. The commonly used leaves of the plants are Eranda (Ricinus communis), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Arka (Calotropis gigantea), etc.

Procedure – The fresh leaves of different plants are collected, sliced and tied in a bolus. Then, the bolus is placed in a pan and heated. Alternatively, it may be dipped in herbal oils that are being heated at a constant temperature. Once the bolus is sufficiently heated, it is removed and gently rubbed over the joints and other affected areas. The bolus should be changed with another heated one once it cools down to maintain the temperature at the site being treated. Once the treatment is over, the treated parts are wiped with a clean and dry tissue paper.

9 Abhyangam :- It is one of the most important dincharyas (daily regimen) mentioned in the Ayurveda for achieving good health and longevity. In Ayurveda, Abhyanga is done by using herbal oils that have several health benefits.

Procedure – The herbal oil used for it and is customized as per the patient’s Prakruti and presenting conditions. Abhyanga can be performed by a single therapist or by two therapists working in synchronization.

Apply firm pressure on the extremities and light to very light pressure should be applied to the neck, abdomen, heart area, face, eyes, and forehead. The abdomen should be massaged in a clockwise circular motion in the direction of the large intestine. Move up on the right side then straight across the abdomen and then downwards on the left side.

The scientific reason for this may be due to the increase in blood flow towards the most distal parts of the body. If the abhyanga is done towards the heart, or in the direction opposite to that of the body hair, the massage may overwhelm the heart through the increased venous return.

Rest for 15 minutes after massage then takes a warm water bath.

A government doctor’s wife had ulcerative colitis and couldn’t find a remedy which could cure UC symptoms in an effective way.   3. KANCHNAAR GUGGUL :- It is one of the very efficient Ayurvedic herbal medicine that contain ingredients like Kanchnaar (Bauhinia variegata) ,Shunti (Zingiber officinale) ,Maricha (Piper nigrum) , Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Ela (Elettaria cardamomum), etc. Kanchnaar guggul is mainly administrated in the cysts.These tablet are used in the condition of dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia. Patient Story – Anita, Suffering from Frozen Shoulder

A patient Anita 50 years old middle age women visit our clinic (Chandigarh Ayurved  Centre ) with stiffness in both her shoulders with pain . She told in her history that the problem started 8 months back when she feel pain in movement of shoulders and didn’t pay much attention to the pain . But she got worried when she faces the pain aggravates and make it difficult for her to do day to day work . Then she visit the nearby hospital for the problem she is facing after examination of the patient and getting some report done . The doctor then told her that she is facing the problem of frozen shoulder due to which she is facing the problem . Then the doctor started her on medication with some painkillers . She then start taking medication for one week but doesn’t get much relief and again visit the doctor for the problem . Then the doctor changes some of her medication and prescribe for another one week . But she doesn’t get much relief with the medication and decide to change the doctor . They then took her to the another hospital in the city and visit the doctor , after examination and going through all her report the doctor prescribe her some medication and advise him for physiotherapy for the same.

Then they visit the physiotherapist to learn some therapy for the problem and she start the therapy along with the medication . After doing therapy for one week she feel some relief and decide to continue the treatment for better relief . But after continuing for 1 month she doesn’t get satisfactory response and again visit the doctor for the complete cure of disease after that the doctor told her that it might take long time to completely cure and also have the chances of reoccurrence. Which her and the family members worried and they then decided to start her on ayurvedic treatment for the same and search on internet . They then came to know about the Chandigarh Ayurved Centre through internet and call the doctor on phone . She tell all her history to the doctor and send all the reports . Then the doctor said that it can be cured permanently with ayurvedic treatment and panchakrama  therapy . After getting satisfactory response from the doctor on phone she decide to visit our clinic . 

After the examination of patient and going through all her report Vaidya Karanvir Singh tell her not to worry, she will get cured completely. This make the patient and the family very happy. She then started on medication as well as on panchkarama therapies . After the completion of panchkarma therapy and the medication for ten days she is 60% cured and can do her daily work easily .

6 PATRA POTALI  PIND SWEDA:

In other terms, Patra Pinda Sweda is known as Elakizhi, and is described as a form of sweat therapy prepared from herbal ingredients such as the leaves of medicinal plants. Different leaves are selected for this procedure depending on the disease to be treated and the dosha involved in causing the disorder. The commonly used leaves of the plants are Eranda (Ricinus communis), Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Arka (Calotropis gigantea), etc.

Procedure – The fresh leaves of different plants are collected, sliced and tied in a bolus. Then, the bolus is placed in a pan and heated. Alternatively, it may be dipped in herbal oils that are being heated at a constant temperature. Once the bolus is sufficiently heated, it is removed and gently rubbed over the joints and other affected areas. The bolus should be changed with another heated one once it cools down to maintain the temperature at the site being treated. Once the treatment is over, the treated parts are wiped with a clean and dry tissue paper.

7 GREEVA BASTI :  

Greeva Basti comprises of two words – Greeva and Basti that translates holding something in the neck.

Procedure – The procedure of Greeva Basti is to lie down a person’s face down on the massage table. Then the dough is prepared out of black gram flour or whole wheat flour and it is made into a small ring of four to five inches in diameter that cover all the vertebrae of the neck and 2-3 vertebrae of the thoracic region. To make it leak-proof, glued it with some amount of water then a lukewarm medicated oil or the decoction of herbs is slowly poured into it. When this cools down it is squeezed out and replaced with the warmer one.  At the end of the procedure, the dough is removed and a gentle massage is given over the area. The total duration of the procedure is about 30 minutes after that a person is made to take rest for a while.

 

Patient Story – Geeta, Suffering from Liver Cirrhosis

A patient Geeta middle aged women of 55 years came from Nepal to visit our clinic Chandigarh Ayurved Centre for her disease . She is very thin with a bloated abdomen, yellow eyes and find it difficult to walk all alone .She neither understand English nor Hindi which make us difficult to communicate. But her son who came along with the patient can understand also able to speak in Hindi. He then told the history of patient that she is suffering with liver problem from last 1 year . She first had issue of abdominal bloating with yellowness of eyes and yellowish micturation . After seeing her eyes one of their neighbor told them of that it might be jaundice and she need to visit the doctor . After hearing this her son took her to the nearby hospital where she underwent several tests ( CBC , LFT , URINE R/M , USG Abdomen ) . After the report of the test came out the doctor told them about the cirrhosis of liver due to which she develop jaundice . But the saddest news is still uncovered when USG reports shows sign of ascites    (collection of water in abdomen ) along with the cirrhosis of liver . He also said that the treatment for her illness might be lifelong with no assurity of complete cure . Which bring the flood of sorrow to the whole poor family , all of them feel helpless and didn’t understand what to do next . They then took medication for a week from that hospital and as soon as she started taking medication within 3 days her condition  get worsen i.e. her abdomen is more bloated , difficulty in passing urine and also suffer with loss of appetite . They then rush to the hospital in between the week only and tell doctor the problem she was facing after started on medication . After examination of the patient the doctor then change her medication and told the family that she might not get cured . This make the family more worried and tensed . They took the medication for another one week which include steroids and diuretics for the problem . But after taking medication for another 4 to 5 days she doesn’t get significant relief and her condition get worsen day by day which make the family more worried about . Then her son took her to another hospital in the city there after seeing the reports of the patient and examination of the patient the doctor told the same thing that she might not get cured and need treatment for life time . The family become hopeless and depressed after hearing the same sad news from another doctor but want to start her treatment . They then started medication from the doctor for almost 2 months but with no relief and it take away all their hopes . Then her son who is driver in Chandigarh came to know about Chandigarh Ayurved Centre from one of his friend . He then call the doctor and tell the history of patient and also sent all the reports . After getting satisfactory response from the doctor on phone he along with his mother visit our clinic . After examination of the patient and going through all her report Vaidya Karanvir Singh told them that the complete cure of disease is possible but she need to take medication for long time . After  hearing this from the doctor they couldn’t believe on their ears and ask him again about is it possible that she get completely cured ? And again he said yes she will surely get fully cured after a period of time . This blow the wind of joy in whole family and they started her medication as well as the panchakarma therapies from the very same day . After taking treatment for a week she doesn’t get much response which make them again worried and they came to discuss the problem to Vaidya Karanvir Singh and he again assured them not to worry about the patient condition after taking medication they took some time to response and she definitely get relief within a day or two . then after taking medication for 2 months she got 60% cured . Her appetite improved , bloating of abdomen decrease , also the edema of foot resolves . Which make the family and the patient very much happy . She is still on medication and her panchakarma therapy are completed.    

TREATMENT GIVEN TO THE PATIENT :-

1NIRUHA VASTI :- Niruha vasti is one of the most important treatments amongst the five detoxifying – cleansing therapies. It helps in clearing the lower part of the gastrointestinal tract and is the best remedial solution for Vata dosha.

Procedure –The procedure starts when a patient is lying in a lateral position. Vasti dravyas are filled in the enema pot and air should be removed through tube and catheter. Lubricate the catheter with oil and insert it in the anus slowly and allow the Vasti dravya to pass through the anus without any disturbance. After basti karma, tell the patient for excretion. After that, the time taken for the expulsion of medicinal decoction is called ‘Vasti Pratyagamkaal’. It should be a minimum of 48 hours.

2 VIRECHANA :- Virechana is a Sanskrit word that means “laxative” or “purging” and may refer to any substance used to induce purging. It mainly includes the administration of purgative substances for the cleansing of pitta through the lower pathways.

Procedure –This therapy involves the intake of Ayurvedic and herbal medicines that destroy the doshas and toxin from the body and bring them to the abdomen. As Pitta is situated at the level of intestines, it is best to expel toxins through the anal route. The Ayurvedic medications that are used for the therapy may vary from person to person depending on the patient’s digestion strength. During the whole treatment, the patient will be subjected to oral intake of Ayurvedic medicines followed by fermentation. The patient will also be subjected to a personalized light and warm diet.

3 GOKSHURA CAPSULE :- Gokshura capsule is pure ayurvedic medicine which is very effective in ascites as it has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the swelling of the abdomen. It also acts as diuretic which causes increased urine secretion from the body and removal of all the toxins. These capsules contain pure extract of Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris).
