WHAT IS IMMUNITY?
Immunity is defined as the bodyβs ability to fight micro-organisms and prevent invasion of them. The disease causing micro-organisms are known as pathogens such as several types of bacteria and viruses. People get exposed to micro-organisms daily as they are present in abundance in the environment. The bodyβs immunity is based on the presence of some chemicals known as antibodies. Antibodies are the proteins which are produced by the body to destroy or neutralize the toxins or disease causing micro-organisms. Foreign micro-organisms carry some proteins on their surface which are known as antigens. These antigens are responsible for immune response of the body. The immune response is produced by the antibodies. Antibodies are specific to a particular disease and destroy particular micro-organisms.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMMUNITY
Immunity is of three types: innate immunity, passive immunity and acquired immunity.
- Innate immunity: It is the inborn capacity of an individual to fight infections. It includes physical barriers (skin, body hair), chemical barriers includes gastric juices, saliva, etc and cellular barrier involving inflammatory response. This type of immunity is non-specific and responds quickly to provide protection against any micro-organism.
- Passive immunity: This type of immunity is attained by borrowing antibodies from the other person like antibodies are transferred from the mother to the baby through breast milk or through blood. Antibodies are transferred from the placenta to the fetus during pregnancy. The transfer of antibodies from the mother to the fetus is the commonest form of passive immunity. However, vaccination is the other form of passive immunity. In this, the antibodies produced in the body of other organism are extracted and then transferred in the desired person. The passive immunity is however, temporary in nature.
- Acquired immunity: It is also known as adaptive immunity. This immunity is acquired by the individual during his or her lifetime. When a person gets exposed to a particular antigen and gets infected, then this leads to development of antibodies against those antigens. When next time, this antigen tries to invade the body, these antibodies attack the antigen and destroy it. The adaptive immunity is also attained through regular physical exercise and nutritious diet. By this way, the immune system gets stronger and fights infections.
WHY CHILDREN HAVE LOW IMMUNITY?
A strong immune system is required for a healthy living. Children are more prone to immunity problems as compared to adults. They require constant care and proper nutrition to have good immunity. Children have low immunity as their body is in developing stage and their immune system has not been properly developed. Due to low immunity, they contract more number of infections.

WHAT AYURVED SAYS ABOUT SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER?
The Ritucharya concept in Ayurved explains how dosha variations occur throughout the year and how these variations may lead to disease. Doshas go through three stages which are accumulation in one season, aggravation in the following season and auto-pacification in the following season.
As previously said, Seasonal affective disorder typically begins in late winter. Ayurved claims that the intersection of Sharad and Hemanta Ritu is where fall occurs.
- Along with accumulation of the kapha, the aggravated pitta from Sharad ritu normally subsides in the Hemanta Ritu.
- As the kapha builds up , it takes control of the body and causes a slowdown of both physical and mental activity.
- It is a natural occurrence and kapha will return to its normal state in spring season, but if the seasonal regime is not followed well, the symptoms of the kapha rise will be severe, which will contribute to the onset of SAD.
