DESCRIPTION –
Varicose veins are large and swollen veins that appear on the legs and feet. Mostly any superficial vein become varicosed but mostly legs vein affected because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in lower body veins. Varicose vein can occur when the veins valves do not work properly and blood does not flow effectively.
CAUSES –
Varicose veins occurred due to increased blood pressure in the veins.
- Varicose veins can happen in the veins near the surface of the skin (superficial). The blood flow towards the heart by the veins one-way valve mechanism.
- When these valves become weakened or damaged blood collect in the veins. This causes the veins enlargement.
- Sitting or standing for long periods can cause blood to pool towards leg veins and increasing the pressure in the veins.
- The veins can stretch from the increased pressure may weaken the walls of the veins and damage the valves.
SIGN AND SYMPTOM
- Veins look twisted, swollen, and lumpy (bulging)
- The veins are blue or dark purple
- Some patients may also experience:
- Aching legs
- Legs feel heavy after exercise or at night
- A minor injury to the affected area may result longer bleeding than normal
- Swollen ankles
- Spider veins appearance in the affected legs.
- Skin discoloration near the varicose veins usually appear brownish or blue in color
- Affected area of skin become red, dry, and itchy
- When suddenly standing up, some people experience leg cramps
- Irregular whitish patches at the ankles.
RISK FACTOR
- Overweight or obesity
- Smoking
- Older age
- Leg injury
- Pregnancy
- Women more affected than man
- Family history of varicose vein
- Standing for long periods
- Taking oral contraceptive pills or hormone replacement
HOW WE HEAL VARICOSE VEIN NATURALLY
- Exercise – Regular exercise encourages good circulation in the legs. Better blood circulation and pumping of the calf muscle help to push the blood collected in the veins, back up towards the heart. Exercise can lower your blood pressure which is a contributing factor to varicose veins. Do low-impact exercises like swimming, walking, cycling, and yoga are all effective ways to get the calf muscles pumping and the blood flowing.
- Compression Stockings to the Rescue – Compression stockings apply more pressure to legs than a regular pair of socks. The pressure keeps normal blood flow and helps the muscles and veins to move it back to the heart. Studies show that people who used high-knee compression stockings with a pressure of 18 to 21 mmHg for one week experienced less heaviness in legs, pain, and aching associated with varicose veins.
- Avoid sodium rich food – Sodium-rich foods cause water retention in the body. To minimize water retention, avoid salty, sodium-rich food.
- Take potassium rich food – Potassium minimizes water retention in the body by causing cells to release water, which then leaves the body in the form of urine. Take food that are high in potassium such as:
- Lentils and white beans
- Almonds and pistachios
- Potatoes
- Leafy vegetables
- Certain fish like salmon and tuna
- Stop Straining – Straining can aggravate or worsen damaged valves. Eat foods with fiber to keep bowels flowing smoothly. Foods that are high in fiber include:
- Seeds, nuts, and legumes
- Wheat, oats, and flaxseed
- Whole-grain foods
- Eat Your Flavonoids – Flavonoids improve blood circulation by reducing blood pressure in the arteries and relaxing blood vessels. Foods that contain flavonoids include:

What is neuralgia?
It is a condition of a sudden painful attack as result of a change in neurological structure or function due to irritation or damage to the nerves without stimulating pain receptor cells which affect the cranial nerves.
CLASSIFICATION OF NEURALAGIA-
It is broadly classified into four types-
- Trigeminal neuralagia
- Glossopharyngial neuralgia
- Occipital neuralgia
- Post herpetic neuralgia
TRIGEMINAL NEURALAGIA-
It is most common form of neuralgia that occurs due to the inflammation or compression of fifth cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve) by a vein and an artery that causes severe facial pain. The facial pain may occur after every few seconds, minutes and hours. It usually affects right side of the face.
CAUSES OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA-
- The exact causes of trigeminal neuralgia are unknown or idiopathic.
- In most of the cases, trigeminal neuralgia is caused by inflammation or compression of the 5th cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve).
- This is the longest nerve inside the skull, which transmits sensations of pain and touch from your face, teeth and mouth to your brain.
- Thus the compression is usually caused by a nearby vein and artery pressing on part of the nerve inside the skull.
SYMPTOMS OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA-
The pain of Trigeminal neuralgia can come in sharp spasms that feel like an electric shock and is generally occurs on right side of the face and may be brought on by sound or touch.
Attacks of neuralgia Pain can be triggered by certain actions or movement, including-
- Brushing your teeth
- Putting on make-up
- Touching your face
- Talking and smilling
- Chewing and swallowing
- Washing your face
- Eating or drinking
- Speaking
- A breeze on your face
- A cool breeze or air conditioning
- Head movements
- Vibrations, such as walking or travelling in a car
AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA-
- Trigeminal neuralgia can occur due to irritation or damage of the trigeminal nerve.
- In Ayurveda, trigeminal neuralgia can be correlated to ‘Ananthavata.’
- Anatnthavata is a typical vata vyadhi means vata among all three doshas is aggravated.
- Tridoshas vitiate the manya or greeva parshva and produces intense intolerable pain in the eyeball, frontal region, root of nose, at the back of the neck, and the temporal region.

SHIRODHARA –
Shirodhara is an ultimate, unique therapy in Ayurveda science. It has a profound impact on the nervous system i.e. the therapy which directly and immediately calms, relaxes and has a cleansing effect on the mind and nerves. It also stimulates the energy centers like Agya chakra and Sahasara Chakra. The process nourishes the Hypothalamus, mainly activates the Pituitary gland and increase blood circulation in the brain. Shirodhara generates pressure over the Sthapani Marma – which in turn stimulates the nerve fluxes at that site so that the Vata gets normalized and helps to reduce the discomfort and pain.
SHIRO ABHYANGA –
It is beneficial when Sparshanendriya (skin) is affected. Here in Trigeminal neuralgia, severe pain is observed which is due to aggarivation of Vata Dosha and disturbed Sparshanendriya Karma. Hence Shiro Abhyanga with Bala-Ashvagandhadi Taila and Mahanarayana Taila seems to be more effective.
